Kara Weiss - Late Lights

After Monty leaves juvenile detention, he turns to his childhood friends Erin and B.J., but they don't know how to reintegrate him back into their lives. Overachiever Erin hasn't outgrown her friendship with him, to the dismay of her family. B.J. is struggling with her sexuality, and her friendship with Monty--once strong through through their bond as outcasts--grows complicated.  In Brookline native Weiss' powerful novella-in-stories (which has been compared to Bloom and McCarthy), the lives of the young characters are entirely grown up.
