The MBTA launched a wireless internet program at some locations and on certain cars in 2008. The transit system is now looking for a sponsor to upgrade the product at no cost to the T.
The MBTA wants to upgrade its wireless Internet service, but without spending precious tax dollars. The Boston area transit system is seeking sponsorship proposals to provide upgraded wi-fi service on commuter rail cars, ferries and select commuter rail stations, according to an MBTA press statement in early March. “The MBTA’s goal is to upgrade the current WIFI service to a system wide, state of the art standard, at no cost to the MBTA and its riders,” the statement says. The MBTA’s mobile ticketing app was launched last November.
Commuters are using the MBTA ticketing application in droves, according to a new figure released today. The MBTA mTicket program surpassed $1 million in sales Tuesday morning when a Lowell customer purchased the application, according to Joshua Robin, MBTA's director of innovation. Robin said sales have surpassed expectations, adding that 9.58 percent of all ticket sales on the MBTA are through the mobile application. The first-in-the-country commuter mobile ticketing program launched in November. The system works by displaying the tickets on the phone’s screen as a digital “flash pass” barcode. The app is available for iPhone and Android and applicable to most MBTA commuter rail lines.

Commuter Rail customers of four lines can now use smartphones to buy train tickets.
Customers of four MBTA Commuter Rail lines can now use their smartphones to board the train. Starting today, riders of the Lowell, Fitchburg, Haverhill and Newbury/Rockport can use the MBTA mTicket app for iPhone and Android to purchase single or 10-ride tickets, according to an MBTA statement. The system works by displaying the tickets on the phone’s screen as a digital “flash pass” barcode, according to the statement. “Customers will now have the ability to purchase tickets without waiting in lines meaning they get more time back in their day and more control over their commuter,” said Richard A. The new weekday commuter rail schedule begins Oct. 29.
As a result of the recent agreement between the state and CSX, the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail (MBCR) has added six new train times to the Framingham/Worcester weekday commuter rail schedule. According to a press release issued yesterday by the MBCR, three new outbound trains will be added as well as three new inbound trains. The new schedule will go into effect Monday, Oct. 29. I noticed the 6 trains are after the morning rush hour? How is the going to help the morning commute? I work in Boston, and in the process to relocate to Worcester (buying a house). I was hoping they would add another Out-bound (am train), lets say (6:15am) arrive Back bay around 7:20pm?? They could make Train# 525 ( In-bound) leaving Back Bay at 5:16 and Express Train!!!
