Brookline officials reported to the Selectmen at last night's meeting.
Yesterday's hurricane pounded the town with winds, left hundreds without power and brought a number of tree limbs to the ground--it even caused a transformer explosion. Emergency operatives were working from early morning until late at night, and town workers are still working around the clock. Brookline's various departments were prepared, officials told the Board of Selectmen at last night's meeting. Police Chief Daniel O'Leary said that the town's emergency operations center was open from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and brought together personnel from the Brookline Fire Department, Police Department and Department of Public Works to monitor and respond to the situation. "These are the times when inter-deptartmental communication works to …

The following is a letter to the editor from the Brookline Fire Department: It’s 3 a.m. You and your family are sound asleep, and awake to the beeping smoke alarm. You are tired and confused from the effects of the smoke. You know you need toget to safety, but when you head for the front door, you find that escape route is blocked by fire that is spreading by the second. What do you do? While this scenario is one I hope you never have to encounter, the statistics tell us that many people do every day. According to the non-profit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), one home structure fire was reported every 85 seconds in 2010. That added up to 369,500 home structure fires, which caused 13,350 injuries and 2,640 deaths. We also know…

Brookline 7th grader given a 'Young Heroes' award after taking action to respond to a small fire in his home.
Smoke is filling the house, pouring out of the oven where dinner has caught fire--but the pets are out of the building and the Brookline Fire Department is on its way. This is the situation for which Brookline 12-year-old Myles Underwood was honored yesterday afternoon at Fire Station #1 in Brookline Village. Mass. Fire Marshal Stephen Coan presented him with a Young Heroes award for his actions. "Because of what you did," Mass. Fire Marshal Stephen Coan began, "the pets are safe, the family is safe. You did everything right. I'm pleased to be here today to present you this citation, and it's under a program we have called SAFE." Underwood was at home when his mother put some pizza in boxes in the oven, and told him she would "be right …

A few ways to safely enjoy fireworks this Fourth of July.
For many, the Fourth of July and fireworks go hand-in-hand. However, each year, fire officials warn that, when amateurs and explosives are involved, Fourth of July fireworks very easily leave someone handless – or worse. Asked about fireworks safety last week, Lexington Fire Chief John Wilson offered a bit of quick advice—“Don't. They’re illegal,” he said.—and then referred to state Fire Marshal Stephen Coan, whose website provides more than a dozen links to presentations and information detailing the dangers and illegality of fireworks. According to data on a report titled “Leave Fireworks to Pros,” from 2002 to 2011, there were 804 major fire and explosion incidents involving illegal fireworks reported in Massachusetts, which caused one …
