Five Things You Need to Know: Oct. 13

1. It's going to be a rainy morning with patchy fog and a high near 67, according to the National Weather Service. 2. Zia, at 1054 Beacon St., is holding a trunk show today at noon, featuring Brookline resident and textile designer Melanie Anderson's coats, handbags and scarves. 3. Allandale Farm is holding a scarecrow making workshop at 3:30 p.m. The cost is $13, and the workshop is limited to 12. Bring a child's pair of pants and shirt to wardrobe your scarecrow. 4. Brookline High School's back-to-school night is tonight at 6:30 p.m. You can also vote for School Council candidates, by silent ballot, in Dubbs Auditorium. 5. Brookline Booksmith hosts author Russell Banks, who had written more than a dozen books.

When/where: Larz Anderson Auto Musuem, Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Why: Check out the marvels of high tech bikes, new and old, at the Larz Anderson museum. The National Weather Service report for Brookline promises showers, about an 80 percent chance of them. NWS estimates about a tenth of an inch, after yesterday's soggy day. Temperatures will be around 72ºF highs, with evening lows of around 62ºF. Clouds will also decrease as the night wears on. Goddard House hosts its Summer Supper and a talk with John Lee, Allandale Farm's manager. "It's tree surgery, not brain surgery, so the plants are very forgiving," said Hartney Greymont arborist representative David Anderson during a tree pruning demonstration at Allandale Farm. Around twenty people turned up on Saturday morning for the free workshop. Anderson, who holds these workshops each May said he was pleased with the turnout and the questions that were asked.
