The second person this year died from the mosquito-borne illness, according to the AP.
The second person this year in has died from the insect-borne illness Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in Massachusetts, the Associated Press reports. The victim has been identified as Charlene Manseau, 63, of Amesbury, according to the Newburyport Daily News. Manseau's family told the paper she may have had a weakened immune system due to recent cancer treatment (Read the full report). Manseau died Saturday. In all, seven human cases of EEE have been recorded this year in the state, along with 19 human cases of West Nile Virus. A Worcester resident in his 60s with severe underlying medical conditions was diagnosed with WNV in mid-August and has since died of the illness.
The first death of a Massachusetts resident due to West Nile Virus (WNV) since 2005 and additional human cases have led state officials to raise the threat level statewide to at least 'moderate." In Brookline, the threat level was raised to high on Aug. 23, after a confirmed case in Cambridge. A week later, Aug. 30, Newton also had a confirmed case. A Newton woman has been confirmed as the fourth human case of West Nile Virus in the state, the Massachusetts Dept. of Health and Human Services announced yesterday. The threat level was raised to "High" in Brookline last week, after a Cambridge man in his 70s was hospitalizaed as the second human case this year. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health Thursday raised the threat level for West Nile Virus in Somerville to high. The move comes after a Cambridge man in his 70s was confirmed to have West Nile Virus, according to an announcement from the public health department, and a press release from the Brookline Health Department (see below). He represents the second confirmed human case of West Nile Virus in the commonwealth this year.
