Wegmans Coming to Fenway: Will You Shop There Over Stop and Shop or Trader Joe's?

There are plenty of grocery options in Brookline.

Mayor Menino announced on Monday that a Wegmans supermarket would be coming into a redeveloped Landmark Center. There's currently no timeline or any word on where exactly in the re-designed building the new grocery store would be located, but you can bet that even the announcement itself will spur on competition with the Fenway Shaw's, which will have a brand new and scary competitor right across the street sometime in the near future. With Trader Joe's in Coolidge Corner, a Stop and Shop on Harvard Street, and a Star Market near the Tappan Street T stop, there is a lot to choose from when it comes to supermarkets. Not to mention the abundance of small, mom and pop shops all over town.  Which will you go for when it comes to groceries? Do …

Peanut Butter Plant to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Shut by FDA

The Sunland Inc. plant that distributes products to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Target, Safeway and others is linked to Salmonella contamination that made at least 41 people ill in 20 states.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Monday that it has blocked food distribution from the Sunland Inc. peanut butter plant in New Mexico whose products were subject to a wide recall in recent months because of salmonella contamination. The various types of Sunland peanut butter products—sold under several brands by major food retailers, including Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Target and Safeway—had been part of a voluntary recall that began in September and later was expanded to include other nut butters as well as processed nuts and peanuts. The FDA action announced Monday is a mandatory order. The company's nut products have been "linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney that has sickened 41 people in 20 states," …

Grafton Boy Gets Salmonella; Peanut Butter Recall Expands to Target, Walmart

The voluntary recall of salmonella-contaminated peanut and almond butter now includes more than 70 products.

The voluntary recall of salmonella-tainted peanut and almond butter has expanded beyond Trader Joe’s stores to include more than 70 products sold nationwide. Thirty people across 19 states have reported salmonella food poisoning that was later linked to the contaminated nut butters, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One of those cases was in Grafton, reported WBZ-TV. Jackson Henson, 4, of South Grafton, became ill with salmonella after eating tainted peanut butter, and his family has filed a lawsuit, WBZ also reports. Stores that carry products named in the recall include Target, Whole Foods, Wal-mart and GNC. The almond and peanut butters were manufactured between May 1 and Sept. 24. Sunland, Inc. is the …

Trader Joe’s Recalls Peanut Butter Over Salmonella Concerns

Company has removed house brand off the shelves and offered refunds to customers.

Trader Joe’s corporate officials say they are acting “out of an abundance of caution” and ordering the recall of one type of its house brand peanut butter over salmonella concerns. “Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter” should not be eaten, the specialty grocery chain said. “We have no confirmed information that suggests this peanut butter is unsafe to eat,” But the food should not be eaten “pending health-related inquiries.” The Food and Drug Administration posted the company’s voluntary recall on its web site, but did not comment on the company’s statement. The potential salmonella contamination could cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly or others with compromised immune systems. …

Week In Review: June 20 - 24

Brookline's news for the week.

Monday recalled a weekend of parades, both to celebrate the Bruins (in part with pizza), and to celebrate Brookline's Flag Day. There were a few incidents over the weekend as well, such as a missing bike and a door-to-door solicitor arrested on an outstanding warrant. Moms Talk tossed out the "Big Weiner Head" diss, but with a good question: how do we talk about sex scandals with kids? Rowing and Baseball made up the week's Sports Buzz. We opened Tuesday with preparations for frugal celebrations. Sports PatchCast wrapped up some of the seasons for several sports. A Brookline cancer survivor was honored in Fenway Park, as were several other folks who rode in the stadium. Adam Sandler's latest film, "I Hate You Dad" filmed at a local church …
