Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it in PATCH TOWN?
Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over Brookline and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. The new "light and sound extravaganza" is billed as Boston's newest holiday tradition.
Stroll through the Faneuil Hall Marketplace this Saturday night, Nov. 17 for the annual tree lighting and hear and see the premiere of Boston's free holiday concert and light show,Blink. The "light and sound extravaganza" featuring the Boston Pops is being billed by organizers as Boston's newest holiday tradition. Attendees can stroll along the Faneuil Hall open marketplace under an 85-foot Christmas tree and 350,000 LED lights choreographed along with a live concert from the Holiday Pops. The show is in partnership with Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Arts Boston and the Greater Boston Visitors and Convention Bureau. The financially and legally troubled Boston-based pizza chain has shut some locations, including its Brookline location, and its future remains uncertain.
The locally owned pizza chain Upper Crust needs a cash infusion of a least a hundred thousand dollars to keep its doors open, or it could close forever, according to the Boston Globe. Upper Crust declared bankruptcy last month and is also in the midst of a scandal that it owes $850,000 to its workers in back wages, according to the US Department of Labor. A separate investigation into the company in 2009 found the company had also violated several labor laws and owed employees $425,000. At a hearing in US Bankruptcy Court Tuesday, the trustee, Mark G. DeGiacomo, said the company needed $120,000 to keep the doors open, according to the Globe. However, that cash did not come through. The chain has rapidly shut down 10 out of its 16 area …
