After President Obama’s selection of John Kerry as Secretary of State, there’s a lot of interest in the senior senator’s seat.
With U.S. Senator John Kerry as President Barack Obama’s pick for Secretary of State, it’s anyone’s guess who will run for the seat in a special election next summer. Kerry was nominated by Obama on Dec. 21. If Kerry is appointed, Governor Deval Patrick will appoint an interim senator, who will be named to the position before the special election. Names have already been dropped locally and from afar, including actor and Cambridge native Ben Affleck, who said he is not interested in running for the seat Kerry has held since 1985. Incoming Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren will take office in January.
Massachusetts Senator-elect Elizabeth Warren has been chosen for a seat on the Senate's Banking Committee, according to the Huffington Post, which cited several sources. Warren, a Democrat who helped create the federal government's Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, defeated incumbent Republican Senator Scott Brown in the November election. The Somerville congressman told WCVB he wasn't sure if Sen. Scott Brown would run, or win, if Sen. John Kerry leaves the Senate to accept a cabinet position.
Rep. Michael Capuano told WCVB he would "consider" running for Senate if Sen. John Kerry leaves the legislative body to join President Barack Obama's cabinet. That said, Capuano told the TV station, "I can't deal the cards," and that he wasn't officially "planning anything." If Kerry, who was first elected to the Senate in 1984, joined Obama's cabinet, it could lead a number of prospective candidates to consider running for his seat. Among those possible candidates would be Republican Sen. Scott Brown, who recently lost a bid for reelection to Elizabeth Warren. Lt. Gov. Tim Murray could not hold out any longer. On Thursday, he told the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce he'd like to be governor, according to WBUR. Mind you, he didn't say he would run, just that he wants to be governor. With the election two years away, starting an official campaign now would be a bit premature. But Murray's not alone. Governor Deval Patrick has said he will not run in 2014, leaving the door open for Murray and a host of other aspirants for the office. State treasurer Steve Grossman and 2010 Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker have also expressed interest in a run in 2014. The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama is considering appointing Massachusetts U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the Secretary of Defense. There was speculation Kerry would become the next Secretary of State. Either way Kerry's move to possibly become a member of Obama's cabinet will open up his current seat. Should he be appointed, a special election would be held to finish out Kerry's term, which expires in 2014. Conversation from the breakfast table this morning to the morning commute has everyone talking - who will run for Kerry's U.S. Senate seat if he's appointed? Could it be Scott Brown? In yesterday's Presidential Election, 69.6 of the town's registered voters turned out, a smaller percentage than in 2008--although a slightly larger population.
Brookline voted in yesterday's election, and the larger results are well-known by now: Following Yesterday's Barack Obama was re-elected President, Elizabeth Warren won the U.S. senate seat, Joe Kennedy III picked up the fourth congressional district seat and Watertown's Marilyn Pettito Devaney retained her Governor's Council Seat. However, the (unofficial) numbers released earlier on the town Clerk's website show some interesting things about the town when compared to other election days--specifically the Sept. 6 primaries, and the 2008 Presidential elections. Of Brookline's 40,373 voters, 28,100 showed up to vote yesterday--about 69.6 percent. A large increase compared to the primaries just two months ago, when less than 15 percent of …
U.S. Senator Scott Brown will leave office in January. What should he do next?
U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, a Republican, was defeated Tuesday by first time candidate Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat. Warren will take office as the state's junior senator in January. She'll replace Brown, who was elected in a special election in January 2010 when he defeated Democrat Martha Coakley. In his concession speech on Tuesday night, Brown told his supporters that "defeat is only temporary." As soon as the race was called, analysts began suggesting Brown may run for Massachusetts governor in 2014 or would seek the state's other U.S. Senate seat if Senator John Kerry is named Secretary of State under President Barack Obama in his second term.
