Earth Day was on April 22, and was celebrated across the entire world. What can we do to show our love of the earth on that day, and every day? Love begins in the home and so does the love for our earth. If you teach your children to respect the earth on every level, they will continue to realize the global impact of environmentalism when they become adults. This is important for the sustainability of life as we know it. Perhaps we can set off that spark in a child, making them want to learn more about the process and do more to help. This week, it's all green here in Brookline. Here are some simple ways you can help the planet.
This week, we'll have to respectfully disagree with Kermit the Frog. We picked some ways to go green earlier in the year, here are some old classics and new ideas from us at Patch. Honorable Mention Kitsch in Sync, a Brookline improv group, had this unique suggestion: We stopped showering in order to save water. It also helps save on gas since no one invites us to go out anymore. Beat the Street Why: Cars are one of the most direct sources of carbon emissions, and using your car less reduces that. Dig your bike out of storage and fix her up, or get a new one from Superb Bicycle or Ferris Wheels in Jamaica Plain. If you're headed somewhere less than a half-mile away, walk or bike there. Even with Earth Day around the corner, it's never too early to start thinking about the planet. The virtues of recycling, compact fluorescent bulbs and composting aside, there are a few other ways you can help the environment by cleaning or greening your environment. Changing a few things at home can reduce your impact on the planet. The Heat is Off Why?: A massive amount of power goes into heating and cooling the average home. Only a few degrees hotter or colder can make a significant dent in your utilities bill. How?: Lower the temperature on your thermostat by a couple of degrees in the winter, and wear warmer clothes.
