Should Brookline Adopt Boston's Rules to Prevent Head Injuries in Kids?

Teams and coaches must be trained in concussion identification and prevention.

Boston's new youth sports head injury ordinance takes effect today. Youth Sports leagues and teams face a set of new requirements to help reduce the number of concussions and other brain injuries caused by contact sports. Youth sports teams must now have in place training for staff to both identify and manage head injuries, according to MyFoxBoston. The new rules apply to both public and private groups, going a step beyond state law, which requires head injury training for staff of high school and public teams. Community centers that organize games and any group that needs a permit for city-owned property would also have to follow the rules, according to The Boston Globe. Pop Warner's Incredible Season Ends

The Brookline-JP Patriots' Jr. Midget team lost 31-0 today in Orlando in the national semifinals, bowing to White Oak of Maryland.

The Brookline-JP Patriots Jr. Midget team made it all the way to the national semifinals of Pop Warner. However the team, which had not surrendered a point all season, ran into a highly talented White Oak (Maryland) squad and fell, 31-0. Highlights from the game were broadcast on ESPN's Web service, ESPN3.

Pop Warner Advances to National Semifinals

The Brookline-JP youth football team beat Oak Cliff (Texas). They advance to the national semifinals on Wednesday.

The Brookline-JP Pop Warner Patriots beat the Oak Cliff Titans of Dallas, Texas on Sunday in their first national playoff game. The game was broadcast live on ESPN3.com. Oak Clif was forced to forfeit in the third quarter after losing four players to injury in four plays. The Patriots had been leading 22-0. They preserved their record of not allowing an opponent to score all season. These were the national quarterfinals. The Patriots play in the national semifinals on Wednesday. Football and Cheerleading Aren't Just Child's Play for Pop Warner Athletes

For the Brookline-Jamaica Plain Patriots, it's not all about winning, it's also about character building and education. Registration is open now and the season starts Aug. 1.

Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc., is a national non-profit serving youth from ages 5-16 by teaching the sports of football and cheerleading. In addition to developing athletic skills, participants learn about the importance of team work, education and good character. PWLS has teams comprised of Brookline and Jamaica Plain youth, the Brookline-Jamaica Plain Patriots.  Jamaica Plain Patch spoke with the Brookline-Jamaica Plain Patriots’ Interim President Thomasina Cole about the value of the league and its impact in the community.
