TALKER: Is Brookline the New Nanny State?

Brookline made some big decisions at the Town Meeting this week by banning plastic bags and Styrofoam cups. Advocates noted that Styrofoam won't break down in landfills and is made of potentially noxious chemicals and that plastic bags are harmful to the environment. Plenty of voices spoke out against this ban for a multitude of reasons ranging from a concern over cleaning up after dog waste to the government having too much say in day to day life. So what do you think? How do you feel about the ban on Styrofoam and plastic bags in town? Do you support banning one or the other or both? Banned in Brookline: Plastic Bags

Town Meeting voted to ban the use of plastic bags for 2013.

After voting to ban Styrofoam food and drink containers, Brookline Town Meeting voted to prohibit supermarkets from using plastic check out bags on Wednesday night. Clint Richmond, Town Meeting member, said that he hoped this vote would inspire statewide action against the unsustainable, environmentally unfriendly grocery bags. The ban will prevent the use of plastic bags at the point of sale in December 2013. Brookline Selectman Dick Benka called the ban “misguided” because while grocery stores are restricted, the new law does not target sandwich shops and convenience stores. Other Town Meeting members expressed their opposition to this ban because of the convenience and the sanitary benefit plastic bags offer. “I own dogs,” Gary Jones …

I also think signaling big corporations is a load of crap I hope to see every store or business in Brookline to stop using the cups and bags not just supermarkets and dd make it fair and have everybody feel the pain you Brookline communists. Let's.see u do the same to mom and pop stores. If I had a business in Brookline I would be leaving real soon and open in a normal city   more ›
