AMC Chestnut Hill Closed; New Showcase Super Lux on the Way

The Chestnut Hill City Sports has also closed, as it prepares for a move to the new building next door.

The AMC cinema in Chestnut Hill has officially closed up shop, making way for a new Showcase Super Lux slated to move in just a few doors down.  The five-screen Chestnut Hill movie theatre closed its doors on Thursday, Jan. 17, according to representatives from WS Development, the owner and operator of The Street (formerly the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center). A sign had been posted on the theatre's marquee announcing its closure, but has since been taken down.  Although he did not comment on the future of the theatre building, WS Development Corporate Marking Director David Fleming told Newton Patch this week that the AMC space will be included in the continued redevelopment of the shopping center. Concerns Build Over Newton Supermarket's Liquor License Application [POLL]

Small business opportunity and safety top the list of concerns for Chestnut Hill residents and business owners.

Local residents and business owners are pushing back against a Newton supermarket's application to sell liquor, citing concerns that the store's sale of beer and wine would drive traffic away from nearby small businesses.  The Chestnut Hill Star Market, located in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center on Route 9, will appear before the Newton Board of License Commissioners tomorrow (Feb. 21) for a hearing on a license to sell beer and wine.  The application comes just a few months after Gov. Deval Patrick signed a law allowing more supermarkets in the state to hold liquor licenses. Under the bill, the cap on liquor licenses held by a store will increase from three to nine over the next eight years. But with three package stores within short …

I'm curious what effect, if any, Trader Joe's in Coolidge Corner has had on business at Coolidge Corner Wine & Spirits (across Beacon St. from Trader Joe's) and Bay State Foods (on Beacon St. at Summit Ave., commonly known as "Liquor Foods").
