Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by Gen. John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. (Fact courtesy usmemorialday.org.) Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. (Fact courtesy history.com.) Here in Brookline, we have a program of events at three locations around town. What Brookline is doing for Memorial Day this year, on Monday, May 28.
A program of events around Brookline to comemmorate Memorial Day. A shuttle departs from Veterans' Post at 8 a.m., goes to Walnut Hills Cemetery, and will return to the World War Monument infront of Town Hall at 11 a.m. for the concluding ceremonies. Conducted by Dr. Ron Nasif, Commander-American Legion Post 11 Conducted by Bill McGroarty, Director of Department of Veterans’ Services All participants are invited to a Collation at the American Legion/VFW Veterans Post immediately followingthe Memorial Day ceremony

Weekly round-up of news since Memorial Day.
Monday was Memorial Day, accented by a number of services around town. On an unrelated note, this week's Mom's Talk asked when it's the right time to send your kids to camp, versus when they'll simply find some strange bedfellows. Brookline's Annual Town Meeting drew to a close Tuesday night. Among the results of the Town Meeting: Traffic Calming will use a Design Review process, Brookline will look into leaving Norfolk County, and Political Robocalls will not be regulated. An oil spill closed Pearl Street for part of the day as well. The Town was rocked by storms Wednesday night, and Tornadoes touched down near Springfield, Mass. In the event of another storm, there are some ways to be prepared. Two Brookline Students earned top honors …

If you want to remember those who gave their lives, here's where to go and what to do this weekend.
If you plan to get out and remember those who served, the Brookline Veterans' Services department has a full program which travels to various sites around town and culminates in the rededication of the restored Civil War tablets outside Town Hall. A shuttle departs from Veterans' Post at 8 a.m., goes to Walnut Hills Cemetery, and will return to the World War Monument infront of Town Hall at 11 a.m. for the concluding ceremonies. Get Out! Memorial Day Weekend
Find something fun for Saturday and Sunday, then remember those who served the Country on Monday.
