MBTA Police Nab Over 1K Fare Evaders So Far in 2013

The number of fare evaders caught this year is slightly less than over the same period last year.

If you’ve ever thought about jumping those MBTA gates to catch a bus, it’s likely you’ll get hit with a fine for evading the fare. MBTA police have issued 1,231 evasion citations system wide so far in 2013, as of Monday, according to MBTA detective Richard Sullivan. Over the same period last year, the MBTA issued 1,267 citations. The fine for a first-time fare evader is $50, according to Sullivan; future offenses could be as high as $500, according to the law. Operation Fare Game, the MBTA’s initiative to enforce fare laws on the T, from time to time leads to arrests. Christian Fitzgerald, 23, of Roxbury was arrested March 22 after he attempted to dodge a fare at Downtown Crossing by entering through the exit-only gate, according to a …

Transit Police Arrest Alleged Brookline Village Copper Wire Thief

Brookline and MBTA Police officers find a man with bolt cutters in his pants, attempting to leave the Brookline Village T stop, where some copper wire was freshly cut and coiled.

A Medford man was taking a stiff-legged midnight stroll in Brookline Village, when he was stopped by MBTA and Brookline police.  At around 2:15 a.m., Transit Police responded to the Brookline Village T stop and arrested this "Midnight Walker," according the tpdnews blog. They say that Robert O'Neil, 43, of Medford was trying to leave the track area, and seemed "stiff-legged"--likely due to the large set of bolt cutters tucked down his pants, along with a pair of work gloves.  Searching the area, MBTA police found copper wire cut into five-foot lengths nearby, and a witness--who saw something and said something--reported that they had seen O'Neil cutting what appeared to be wire on the track bed.  O'Neil was arrested and charged with …

T Police Make Arrest Wanted Man During Fare Enforcement

MBTA police make an arrest based on a "wanted" poster the Brookline Police department issued on Aug. 17, on a warrant for attempted murder.

Yesterday, MBTA police were watching Downtown Crossing station for fare evasion when they spotted a man who they recognized from a Brookline Police "wanted" poster.  According to an MBTA Police Report, the man--identified as Terrance Cannon, 32, of Boston--was carrying an open pint of alcohol in the station, and initially gave them a false name and social security information. Officers say he seemed nervous while they were speaking to him. When they confirmed his identity, they determined that he had three outstanding warrants for his arrest, one of which was for an alleged attempted murder in Brookline on Aug. 17. The report also says he had an outstanding warrant for unarmed robbery and driving without a license. T Police say he had …

Car Stuck on T Tracks in Brookline

Early Monday morning, a vehicle was stuck on the Green Line near Coolidge Corner.

Monday at 1:15 a.m., a white sedan got stuck on the tracks outside of Lenscrafters in Coolidge Corner.  According to a report from the MBTA police, a 22-year-old Attleboro woman drove onto the T tracks and got stuck. There was no damage to the vehicle, and the driver was uninjured, but the vehicle had stopped moving near the Coolidge Corner intersection of Harvard and Beacon Streets.  The woman told police that she had been looking at her GPS and not paying attention to the road, when the device told her to turn left onto Beacon Street. She missed the road, and started driving along the tracks, inbound. She says a passer-by told her she was fine, and to keep going until the next intersection. She then reached a point where she couldn't go …

D Line Front Door-Only Policy In Effect

This front-door only policy will hopefully help the MBTA enforce the collection of fares as it continues to face debt and infrastructure issues.

In an effort to reduce the number of people who skip out on their T fares, the MBTA began enforcing a front door-only policy for street-level stops on the D line starting yesterday, April 17. According to a press release on the MBTA website, this front door-only fare collection will take effect during weekends, holidays and off-peak hours only. During peak hours, which include 6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. on weekdays, customers will be able to board the trolleys from the side and rear doors with pre-loaded CharlieCard, Charlie Ticket or other pass, the press release said.  This is not the only line that has the front door only policy; other branches of the Green Line, including the C Line, have already implemented the front…
