Brookline 2012 Election: The Analysis

In yesterday's Presidential Election, 69.6 of the town's registered voters turned out, a smaller percentage than in 2008--although a slightly larger population.

Brookline voted in yesterday's election, and the larger results are well-known by now: Following Yesterday's Barack Obama was re-elected President, Elizabeth Warren won the U.S. senate seat, Joe Kennedy III picked up the fourth congressional district seat and Watertown's Marilyn Pettito Devaney retained her Governor's Council Seat. However, the (unofficial) numbers released earlier on the town Clerk's website show some interesting things about the town when compared to other election days--specifically the Sept. 6 primaries, and the 2008 Presidential elections. Of Brookline's 40,373 voters, 28,100 showed up to vote yesterday--about 69.6 percent. A large increase compared to the primaries just two months ago, when less than 15 percent of …

Joe Kennedy III Wins Fourth Congressional District Seat

Retiring Barney Frank will be succeeded by scion of Kennedy political dynasty.

Joe Kennedy III will be a new U.S. Congressman  from Massachusetts. At around 9:30 p.m., the Associated Press called the race for 32-year old Kennedy, who lives in Brookline, as he was beating by a 2-1 margin Norfolk Republican Sean Bielat in the race to represent the redrawn Fourth Congressional District. Rep. Barney Frank, a media celebrity Tuesday night at Kennedy's celebration party at the Newton Marriott Hotel, is retiring after serving the Fourth District since 1981. Yes, the Kennedys are a famous political family, but Joe III especially follows family tradition with this particular win: his father, Joe Kennedy II, served as Congressman from Massachusetts (in the 8th Congressional District) from 1987-1999. And his great-uncle, who …

Barney Frank: No Plans for Paid Lobbying After Congress

Frank reportedly signed with a talent agency, according to a blog on The Hill.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Barney Frank's life after Congress will not include two things: paid lobbying or work as a lawyer. Instead, Frank plans to teach, write a book, give speeches and work as a political commentator, according to a report in the Boston Herald. The Massachusetts congressman clarified his plans in a statement Wednesday after receiving questions about his future after Congress. According to a blog post on The Hill, Frank has also signed with a talent agency.  Frank closed his statement Wednesday by directing any questions to William Morris Endeavors, a talent and literacy agency run by Ari Emanuel, brother of Chicago Mayor and former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. Why should we now start believing anything Frank has to say? Has he somehow had an epiphony that character counts and honesty is expected? From the man who said he meant "renters" deserved affordable housing, and he never meant home ownership. I can't believe MA voters kept this clown in office for this long. I only hope voters see the error of their ways and instead, change the tragic course we'…   more ›

Kennedy and Bielat to Face off for Fourth Congressional District Seat

Kennedy and Bielat both had huge victories in the district.

After months of campaigning across a large and newly redrawn district, the pool of Fourth Congressional District candidates has officially been whittled down from six to two. Democrat Joe Kennedy III and Republican Sean Bielat will be the two names on the November ballot for the Fourth Congressional District, according to reports from the Associated Press. Despite the low voter turnout, Kennedy had a landslide victory against his two opponents, Rachel Brown and Newton resident Herb Robinson, taking more than 90 percent of the vote according to AP reports.  "Tonight, I am honored to accept the Democratic nomination for the Fourth Congressional District of Massachusetts," Kennedy said in an emailed statement.
