The following is from the IRS: The Internal Revenue Service has issued its annual “Dirty Dozen” list of tax scams, reminding taxpayers to use caution during tax season to protect themselves against a wide range of schemes ranging from identity theft to return preparer fraud. The Dirty Dozen listing, compiled by the IRS each year, lists a variety of common scams taxpayers can encounter at any point during the year. But many of these schemes peak during filing season as people prepare their tax returns. The IRS has announced a delayed start to the 2012 tax filing season.
You'll have to wait a bit if you are used to filing your annual tax return at the earliest possible date. The Internal Revenue Service has revised its opening date for tax season -- pushing it eight days to January 30, 2013. The tax filing deadline is Monday, April 15 The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on January 30, 2013. Most taxpayers should be able to file on that date though some revised forms may not be immediately available. You can blame the delay on the federal "fiscal cliff" crisis and the new tax bill Congress passed just after Dec. 31. You can find more information in this Forbes article. On Friday, the Internal Revenue Service announced annual inflation adjustments for tax year 2013, including the tax rate schedules, and other tax changes from the recently passed American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012. The tax items for 2013 of greatest interest to most taxpayers include the following changes. Details on these inflation adjustments and others are contained in Revenue Procedure 2013-15, which will be published in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2013-5 on Jan.28, 2013. The Brookline ophthalmologist also pleads guilty to obstruction of an IRS tax audit.
The information in this story comes from a press release from the office of U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz: Mark S. Hughes, of Brookline, was convicted today, Monday, in federal court on tax charges. Hughes, 50, pled guilty before U.S. District Judge William G. Young to evading taxes and obstructing an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax audit. Had the case proceeded to trial, the government would have tried to show that between 2003 and 2009, Hughes did not pay taxes on what the feds believe to be millions of dollars of income, causing a tax loss to the IRS of more than $800,000. The government claims that Hughes evaded taxes by diverting money that he was earning as an ophthalmologist to a consulting firm he owned called Omega, and then …
