State Troopers Recognized for Helping in NY, NJ After Hurricane Sandy

"There's nothing that I can compare to what I saw down there," said one of the 25 troopers that helped out after Sandy devastated nearby states.

Before Hurricane Sandy's full scope of devastation in New York and New Jersey was even known, 25 men and women from the Massachusetts State Police were on their way to assist those who had been displaced from their homes. "When I reached out to ask if the state police would be willing to field a group of 25 people, I already knew the answer," Undersecretary for Homeland Security and Director of MEMA, Kurt Schwartz said in a press conference in Framingham Monday afternoon. "The answer was a resounding yes."  One of the troopers was Brian Dunn, who works out of the South Boston barracks. "There's nothing that I can compare to what I saw down there," said the 28-year veteran of the force. "We were there when they came home for the first time…

The state of New Jersey asked for help with devastation in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, requesting that nearby states send law enforcement officers to help keep peace and order in the hardest-hit areas of New Jersey. On Saturday, a detachment of 25 troopers from the Massachusetts State Police was selected and sent, reporting to Fort Dix to be sworn in as police officers.  The Massachusetts State Police officers are working with Louisiana State Police and New Jersey State Police in areas including Brick, Ocean Park, Seaside Heights and Palisades Park. Many of the MSP troopers are experienced with storm-related issues, especially after the destructive storms Massachusetts has experienced over the …

Patch & AOL Send Hurricane Sandy Relief Trucks to Long Island, New Jersey

Employees help out — and you can, too.

It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away. But in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be both the best of neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy-ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Green D Line Back to Full Service

The line was partially down Tuesday after a tree took out one of the poles in Newton.

After shuttle buses transported T passengers through much of Newton yesterday, the MBTA's Green D Line is back to full service. According to a Tweet sent this morning around 9:30 a.m., the MBTA GM confirmed that normal trolley service had resumed.  Governor Deval Patrick also noted the service restoration during a post-storm press conference this morning.  Shuttle buses replaced D Line trains all day yesterday while crews worked to repair a broken pole between the Eliot and Waban stops. The line was shut down most of the day between Newton Highlands and Riverside, although there were points where the whole line was down.  During a statement yesterday in Newton, Acting MBTA GM Jonathan Davis said crews were working to repair one of the …

Brookline officials reported to the Selectmen at last night's meeting.

Yesterday's hurricane pounded the town with winds, left hundreds without power and brought a number of tree limbs to the ground--it even caused a transformer explosion.  Emergency operatives were working from early morning until late at night, and town workers are still working around the clock. Brookline's various departments were prepared, officials told the Board of Selectmen at last night's meeting.  Police Chief Daniel O'Leary said that the town's emergency operations center was open from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and brought together personnel from the Brookline Fire Department, Police Department and Department of Public Works to monitor and respond to the situation. D Line Shut Down in Newton Through Wednesday Afternoon, Possibly Longer

Workers will repair a broken pole in Newton and clear storm-related debris from the Green Line D branch. Shuttle buses will replace the trolley during the down time.

Passengers leaving Brookline on the MBTA's Green Line D branch will have to deal with shuttle buses through Wednesday as crews work to repair a damaged steel pole in Newton and remove debris brought down by Hurricane Sandy. The repairs will take "at least 24 hours," according to State Transportation Secretary Rich Davey, and a "best-case scenario" would have service up and running by rush hour Wednesday. In the meantime, shuttle buses will operate in place of the trains, Davey said. Currently, shuttles are transporting passengers from Riverside Station to the Newton Highlands stop, according to the latest T alerts. Earlier this afternoon, shuttles replaced the entire line from Riverside to Kenmore while crews removed debris. Commuters …
