Hundreds of people bused in from across the state packed into a State House auditorium Tuesday morning to rally in support of Gov. Deval Patrick's tax plan, which they say is critical to make much needed improvements in education and transportation infrastructure. The rally, which was organized by Campaign for Our Communities, a coalition of more than 120 organizations across the commonwealth, ended with attendees heading off to the offices of their representatives, urging them to vote for Patrick's plan. A drop in the state's median household income led to the salary reduction.
Massachusetts lawmakers will get a pay cut this year, in accordance with a state law that links legislators’ salaries to the state’s median household income. Governor Deval Patrick’s office announced the drop in wages this week. “As required by Article CXVIII of the Amendments to the Constitution, for the purpose of adjusting the base compensation of members of the General Court, we have ascertained, from the federal census American Community Survey and reports of average weekly wages, that the median household income for the Commonwealth for the preceding two-year period decreased by 1.8 percent,” Patrick said in a Jan. 2 letter to State Treasurer Steven Grossman. Work has officially begun on the $93 million Muddy River Restoration Project, a comprehensive urban environmental, historic landscape preservation and flood control project to address serious flooding and environmental issues along the Muddy River and Emerald Necklace. The large-scale, multi-year project is being undertaken by the Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with the Town of Brookline, the Commonwealth, and the City of Boston. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick came out firing Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, attacking his predecessor Mitt Romney's record in the Bay State. "Mitt Romney talkes a lot about all the things he's fixed," he said. "I can tell you that Massachusetts wasn't one of them. He's a fine fellow and a great salesman, but as governor he was more interested in having the job than doing it."
