Just a Second!

Don't judge a fruit by its peel.

Next time you go to a farmers’ market, take a careful look around. Not just at everything on the tables—look under the tables as well. You may find bundles of corn waiting to be unpacked, a fellow shopper’s bags laden with produce from another stand, even a guide dog stoically resisting the temptation to snatch up the morsels rolling around under his nose. You may also find a few sad-looking peaches or tomatoes rolling around in a cardboard box. The box grows stickier by the minute as juices seep out of the bruised fruit, and by late afternoon it will be filled with table rejects: victims of shoppers’ poking fingers and careless elbows. These rejects or “seconds” may not be the most beautiful produce at the market, but they are usually …

I am working on deleting these unsolicited spam posts by user "louisvuitton," so if readers see them, flag them. Moonbeam, what are you talking about? I have literally no idea what you are trying to communicate here. There aren't any attacks on any stores (in either town) that I've been writing about. I can only assume you're complaining about the spam comments like the one I just deleted, of …   more ›

Paralysis in the Produce Aisle

The return of the farmers’ market relieves the burden of indecision.

Brookline could hardly be considered a food desert, but my diet has been terrible ever since Enterprise’s East Coast farmshare ended in early May. Without that weekly box of produce to tackle, I have found it increasingly difficult keep up with eating “real” foods. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a few nights of macaroni and cheese....or Chinese takeout...or soup from a box...but a few weeks worth of nights like that is another story. Yes, a five-minute drive to Whole Foods (or a slightly longer trek to Russo’s, but I am nothing if not exceedingly lazy) would put me within reach of nearly every vegetable I could want. And, given my usual desire to plan out everything, you’d think that I would appreciate having complete control over …

Tips to Take to the Brookline Farmers' Market

Brookline is lucky to have wonderful farmers' markets. Here are some tips to help you have the best farmers' market experience!

A column by Newton resident Kristine Munroe-Mahoney that looks at "green" living and sustainable practices in the City of Newton. It’s finally beginning to feel like spring, and with the warmer weather comes one of my favorite things: Farmers’ Markets! In Brookline, theFarmer's Market begins on June 17, and runs until October 28. The environmental benefits of supporting a local farmers’ market are numerous. The produce is generally locally grown and the other foods sold there are also often locally sourced. Some of the produce you’ll find uses less, if any, pesticides than the produce sold at grocery stores. It also helps you support local farms and the community.   Aside from all of the green benefits of farmers’ markets, it’s also fun …

In addition to bags to carry everything home - I recommend bringing sturdy containers for packing up delicate produce. Strawberries (and, later, raspberries, tomatoes, and peaches) are too easily bruised in a plastic bag, and the paper boxes they're displayed in aren't nearly enough to protect them from regular jostling as you make your way home. I tend to use the clear plastic snap-shut …   more ›
