Should Brookline Adopt Boston's Rules to Prevent Head Injuries in Kids?

Teams and coaches must be trained in concussion identification and prevention.

Boston's new youth sports head injury ordinance takes effect today. Youth Sports leagues and teams face a set of new requirements to help reduce the number of concussions and other brain injuries caused by contact sports. Youth sports teams must now have in place training for staff to both identify and manage head injuries, according to MyFoxBoston. The new rules apply to both public and private groups, going a step beyond state law, which requires head injury training for staff of high school and public teams. Community centers that organize games and any group that needs a permit for city-owned property would also have to follow the rules, according to The Boston Globe. A Halloween Headache

With two athletic and adventurous boys, and a flurry of media attention about concussions, you can say I’ve got concussions on the brain.

Last week we held a Halloween party with 9 sixth-grade boys. Scary, huh? In the words of my husband, “Why do we do this to ourselves?” Everything started out so well. The boys all trekked to our house after school where they eagerly crowded the basketball court and competed wholeheartedly at ping-pong and Wii. They ate extra gooey pizza and drank neon colored sodas outside in the crisp October sun. Nothing too frightening at all occurred until one of my sons literally took a header down a deep cement stair well that led to our below-grade basement. He popped up eerily resembling his brother’s Frankenstein's Monster mask. He was covered in angry red scrapes from his head to his high-tops. His head and face were bleeding. He was shaken, sore…

Very timely. There is a big push in schools to educate parents, coaches, administrators, and athletes regarding head injuries and their effects. I think the highschool has the parents of athletes attend the informational session @Pam Roberts mentioned along with the athletes. You can't be too informed about this particular topic.   more ›
