Consumerism surrounds the holiday season: is greed inevitable, and how do you avoid it?
For those children who celebrate, Christmas' biggest connotation can be a pile of gifts under the tree. With this in mind, a panel of staff contributors at The Chicago Tribune tackled the question of whether it's inevitable to see greed in their kids around Christmastime. The parents weighed in on suggestions to remind kids of Christmas spirit. Among their suggestions? Help your kids round up some old toys to donate to charity before giving them new toys. Sign them up to participate in a community service project. The Tribune's advice got us thinking at Patch about how we were taught or are teaching our kids to be less greedy around the holidays. Some of our suggestions? Find a giving tree and let your child pick a name or two off of it, …

How much is too much to spend on children and teens? We want to hear your thoughts, Brookline!
As the holiday shopping season goes into full swing, some people are maxing out their credit cards to pay for presents and others are setting budgets and sticking with them. Scour just about any Facebook stream or stop in a local coffee shop and chances are you’ll hear parents debating the merits of setting spending limits. Or, you'll hear them lamenting about just how much they've already spent. The ideas for a perfect limit do seem to vary rather greatly. Some parents say $100 per child is more than enough. Others tend to lean toward much more generous figures. After all, there’s nothing like seeing a child’s eyes light up as they unwrap gift after gift. And that’s what we want to hear from you about, Brookline! Do you set spending …

A worker who programmed the announcement system to play "Deck The Halls" was initially said to be facing a reprimand or worse. The state's transportation chief said on Tuesday morning he wouldn't be punished. But in the end, the worker was reprimanded.
UPDATE: The T worker was, in the end, reprimanded, according to Universal Hub. MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo issued this statement on Tuesday afternoon: "The employee today was reprimanded and the incident is now included in his personnel file. No further action will be taken unless such an incident happens again. This matter is closed." ~~~~~ Over the holidays, an MBTA worker displayed a bit of Christmas cheer by programming the subway announcement system to "sing" the carol "Deck The Halls." But T officials initially saw nothing funny in the halting, computerized tones that, according to a blogger who captured it on film, brought joy to commuters. The T said the worker could be reprimanded or even fired in what Universal Hub dubbed "Fa La …

Well, it's the thought that counts, right?
Yesterday—as is our tradition on the first Sunday of every December—we went to Church, had breakfast at Martin's while our children attended religious education class (LOVE religious education), and then trekked to Allendale Farm to pick out our Christmas tree. This year, however, we channeled our inner Chevy Chase and got two trees that we spent all day dressing up in their holiday best. The smaller, fatter tree was draped in classy white lights and smugly preens in the corner of our sunroom for all the passersby to see. The very tall, slightly thinner tree was slathered in multicolored lights with fat retro bulbs like the ones I grew up with, only these won’t set the tree on fire five minutes after you turn them on. The tree in the …

'Tis the season to take stock and be grateful.
Tis the season to take stock and be thankful. And I am very thankful. Below are a few reasons why, but there are countless more. And for that I am most grateful. My mother’s stuffing. It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving or Christmas day without my Mom’s stuffing. I have four brothers and one sister, and no matter where we all are for the holidays, whether we’re together or spread out across the continents, we all make sure Mom’s stuffing sits prominently on our holiday tables. (I'm also thankful for her sugar-and-spice cookies, which arrive in the mail every December... hint, hint.) My ever-indulgent husband. Case in point: At 12:00 a.m. on November 1 of every year, the seasonal music station on television starts playing round-the-clock Christmas …
