Brookline's La Morra One of Boston Mag's Top 50 Restaurants

Boston Magazine announced its top 50 restaurants in Brookline, and La Morra of Brookline makes the 50.

Not only does Boston Magazine think Brookline is one of the best places to live (per their 2011 list), but they also thought it was one of the best places to eat last year.  This year, La Morra is back in the magazine's 50 Best Restaurants list. And, their tip for true insiders is that diners can ask for their pasta to be gluten-free. Through a series of charts and data, the Magazine broke their list down, and determined that of their 50 candidates, 22 percent (i.e., 11) serve Italian food. Of the 50, 2 percent are in Brookline (i.e., La Morra).  Earlier this year, Boston Magazine also listed twelve Brookline businesses bringing home Best of Boston awards for 2012.  Below is a press release from Boston Magazine: A Brookline restaurant …

Cutty's "Triple-D" Segment Airing (Again) Tonight

The Diners, Drive-ins and Dives segment filmed at the Brookline Village sandwich shop will re-air tonight.

One of your neighbors is going to be on TV! Your neighbor, in this case, being Cutty's sandwich shop in Brookline Village.  The Cutty's Facebook page posted a reminder last night that their episode on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" will re-air tonight, Friday night, at 9 p.m. on the Food Network (check your local listings). Earlier this year, the Food Network star filmed a segment at the Washington Street sandwich shop. That episode has already aired, but if you missed it the first time around, you can set your DVR tonight to catch it again.  The Food Network star's show travels around the country as the host explores local flavors. In a typical segment, the chef will show Fieri how one or two of their signature dishes are made…

Boston University Gets a Slice of Otto Pizza

The new Commonwealth Avenue location for Brookline's pizza-serving newcomers Otto Pizza is now open.

Boston University students, and anyone on Commonwealth Avenue, can become topping enthusiasts at Otto Pizza's newest location. Otto, who opened their first spot in the Brookline area earlier this year, moved into 888 Comm Ave, a site which once held the Upper Crust pizza which shuttered suddenly in June. The BU-adjacent Otto is the restaurant chain's fifth restaurant, and third in the Boston metro area.  See photos from the restaurant on Otto Pizza's Pinterest page.  The restaurant seats 60, and serves the same pizza menu as at their Readers Choice-winning Coolidge Corner location from 11:30 a.m. to midnight on weekdays, and until 1 a.m. on weekends. According to the Otto Blog, they are also working on delivery from that location--although…

How Was Hops and Scotch's Opening Week?

Hops and Scotch opened last week. A week on, owner Darren Tow chatted with Boston Eater about opening, feasting and air conditioning.

There is not much skipping or stone throwing at Coolidge Corner's new restaurant, Hops and Scotch--which opened last week. Owner Darren Tow sat down with Boston Eater, a blog focusing on night life and food, and talked with them about their first week in town.  Tow told Eater, "We’re happy! We were surprised that there was such interest; we were pretty busy the first day we opened. Pretty exciting to see that maybe we did something right." He also described some technical difficulties with the air conditioning, which Tow said had been working fine until opening day. Technicians were able to get the unit working at half capacity.  See the full interview on Boston Eater.  The restaurant focuses on craft beer and scotch offerings, as well as …

Shiki: Authentic Flavors of Japan

Sushi for the discerning palate, and much, much more.

Brookline offers plenty of sushi, from everyday spots perfect for a nice bit of maki, to express joints smelling like greasy tempura, to supermarkets selling pre-packaged boxes of the stuff. You might think there's no reason to visit another sushi joint. But Shiki, if you let it, will give you a hundred different reasons. To start, there's much more here than sushi: the menu offers dozens of small plates and noodle dishes that sparkle with the flavors and textures of meticulous and distinctive Japanese cooking. Shiki is just a few steps off of Harvard Street; an unassuming little space, a breath of peaceful air within brown and mustard-colored walls. The menu takes a bit of study, offering written descriptions of the lengthy offering of …

Several Changes for Brookline's Food Landscape

With a number of changes coming to restaurants in the Brookline area, where will you be going for dinner?

Whether you consider yourself a Brookline foodie, or just want somewhere new to take someone special on a date, there are a few changes coming to the nightlife landscape in Brookline. In case you missed a story, here are the quick hits: So, what might this mean for Brookline's foodies?  We asked food blogger and Patch Columnist Cristin Nelson, who said: "While there's a very vibrant restaurant culture in Brookline, it often caters towards the same type of person, which can send other segments away towards other areas like Allston or downtown Boston. But this could be an exciting time for business owners who hope to attract an entirely new segment of people." For examples, she said that Otto's new location in Coolidge Corner is now Otto's …

Bites Nearby: Summer Chill

Heatwave? No problem. Here's two Brookline favorites that can help cool you off.

Everybody has a favorite way to cool off during the summer months: running through sprinklers, guzzling down popsicles, or plunging headfirst into an ocean wave. My favorite method for cooling down is with an oversized scoop of ice cream, so here are two of my favorite places in Brookline to search out frozen goodies. Bonus--they've both got central air.   1663 Beacon Street, Brookline. Open Sunday through Thursday 11:30am-11:00pm; Friday & Saturday 11:30am-11:30pm. This chain of ice cream hotspots has its roots, if you can believe it, right in Brookline, where the first Emack & Bolio's opened in 1975 as a late-night hangout with creative renditions of homemade concoctions. These days, $3.60 will buy you a generous scoop of popular flavors…
