Brookline News and Gifts a Classic Five and Dime Feel

Not many stores give off that authentic five and dime feel anymore.

When you walk into Brookline News and Gifts, you step into the classic five and dime store of yesteryear. The crowded shelves are almost over run with magazines, gift cards, gift wrap, board games, toys, watches, cigars, pipes, sunglasses, shot glasses and all kinds of witty collectable gifts. Folks come in for their scratch tickets and stay for the conversation with Sam Patel, whose family purchased Brookline News and Gifts from the original owner five years ago. “It feels like a real village around here,” Patel said. “This is a great community.” Cliff Bouvier, a barber up the street at Crew International stopped in for his lottery tickets and talked about the old days of Brookline News and Gifts. “Everybody used to come in here from the …

Week in Review: Presidential Debate, Third Armed Robbery in Two Weeks

Brookline responds to a presidential debate, two local businesses come together. Police look into a third armed robbery new BU and a slew of car breaks.

The week began with a look at Sagewell Imaging in Brookline, Monday morning, as well as launching our Brookline 2012 Election Guide. We also learned that Del Frisco's Grille will soon Serve Up Steaks in Chestnut Hill. Faulkner Hospital changes its name to Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital. As it is Breast Cancer Awareness month, we're starting to Think Pink with a few events in Brookline. We also wanted to know Who Makes a Difference in Brookline? We looked at last week's Armed Robbery on Boston Border in the Police Log. Tuesday, we looked at the Candidates Wrangle over Character and Partisanship--and we were curious as to Who Won the Senate Debate. Week in Review: BU Students Robbed, Chat with Gov. Patrick, and Yom Kippur

Two incidents of BU students being robbed near the Boston border, Romney and Ryan stop in for a fundraiser, and a live chat with the Governor. Boston University loses one of its former presidents.

Coming out of the weekend, we wanted to know What Were Your Favorite Things at Brookline Day? We got word of a Romney-Ryan Camp Fundraisers in Chestnut Hill later in the Week. Monday, there was also a Trader Joe’s Recall on Peanut Butter, Over Salmonella Concerns. In more large business news, Panera Asks Fans To Create Their Next Sandwich. Week in Review: MCAS Results, Hancock Village as "Smart Growth" and West Nile in Brookline

In addition to a Patch live chat about College Admissions Essays, the week also held National Cheeseburger Day and International Talk-like-a-Pirate Day.

The MBTA told Patch that some D Line Service Trouble May be Due to Faulty Equipment. Monday morning, we caught up with The Olmsted Elm, which now Rests in Pieces (of Art), after being taken down last year.
