Brookline High School Teacher Launches 'Brookline Talks About Guns'

A Brookline Public Speaking teacher presents a new challenge in the discourse surrounding guns.

Elon Fischer, a public speaking teacher at Brookline High School, wants to have an open discussion on a tough topic: Guns. Instead of having his senior students write essays on a variety of literary topics, requiring them to demonstrate analytical and argumentative writing and independent research skills for their senior papers, Fischer has his students write about contemporary issues. Fischer also writes his own version of a senior paper. This year, for Public Speaking, Fischer is writing about how communities like Brookline can talk about guns in a productive and meaningful way. “After the Newtown tragedy, I was struck by how limited the voluminous public discussions of guns, gun violence, and gun safety was in the halls of government …

BRAVO! My neighbors sleep safe at night because of the possibility THEY might have a 12 gauge under bed or pistol under their pillows. To think that the geniuses in DC want to create a safer workplace for criminals is in keeping with their very low approval score! Riddle me this: a 30 second spot during the super bowl sold for 3 MILLION Dollar$ to influence adults purchasing practices. While OUR …   more ›

The case is under investigation, but "to date, there is no evidence of involvement of Brookline students in these charges.

Superintendent William Lupini issued the statement Friday afternoon, saying the schools are cooperating with police as they investigate this crime. Lupini stressed that at this point there is no evidence that any students were harmed or involved in the case. "We are very concerned about these allegations," read Lupini's statement. Brookline High School Employee Charged with Possession of Child Pornography

Superintendent: Benjamin Schwartz was already on leave for an unrelated matter.

Benjamin Schwartz, 32, of Brookline was charged with possession of child pornography and dissemination of obscene material on Thursday. Schwartz has worked at Brookline High School for the last 10 years as a special education  paraprofessional. “Mr. Schwartz was on leave when this occurred,” Superintendent Bill Lupini said. "He was on a family medical leave since Oct. 1 for issues totally unrelated to this instance.” “He won’t be returning (to work at Brookline High School) until we have enough appropriate information to make a decision,” Mr. Lupini said. “When we think we have appropriate information, we will take appropriate action. We have no complaints on record against this employee by any students at this time.” Schwartz will be …

Are Drugs & Alcohol a Problem at Brookline High?

New national study indicates that drug and alcohol use during the school day is a bigger problem than previously thought. How much so in Brookline?

Roughly 17 percent of American high school students engage in smoking, drinking or doing drugs during the school day, according to a new study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (NCASA). The NCASA study also indicates that approximately 86 percent of students reported that they knew of classmates who abused drugs or alcohol during the school day. This was the 17th such study conducted by the NCASA. The group interviewed more than 1,000 students ages 12-17, according to an article appearing on Huffington Post. In May, in an effort to curb underaged smoking, Brookline's Town Meeting voted in favor of a warrant article that raises the tobacco sales age to 19--an article brought forth by a High School student.  Last …

Brookline High Graduation 2012: Seniors Move On with Music and Speeches

Brookline's 2012 class graduates with musical numbers, speeches from alumni and students, and a rapping headmaster.

The sun shone, music played, and the Brookline High School Class of 2012 closed their chapter at Brookline High School on Sunday, June 10. Brookline High School's graduation ceremony featured a speech by Grace Kelly, a jazz musician and former Brookline High School student, as well as speeches by two students: Jeffrey Strickland and Lia Parker-Belfer. Interim Headmaster John Ritchie presented the class to the Superintendent of Schools Bill Lupini in the form of an old school rap. With a laugh, Lupini added, "that's the second time he's done that to me," before accepting the class and presenting diplomas.  Flip through the gallery above, or check out photos added by your neighbors and classmates from our Add Your Photos gallery this morning.
