The Blizzard of 2013 in Brookline

Post your blizzard pics on Patch!

The Blizzard of 2013 began on the afternoon of Friday, February 8th. Brookline and the Boston area had about 25 inches of snow by the morning of Saturday, February 9th. The Town of Brookline declared a snow emergency at around 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7th, which remains in effect until 6 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 11th. Governor Deval Patrick signed an executive order to ban vehicle traffic beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. It was the first time the order had been signed since 1978. Penalties for driving during the ban include a $500 fine and up to one year in prison. The driving ban was lifted just before 1 p.m. on Saturday. The blizzard dropped enough snow to shut down the MBTA until further notice, (they are hoping reopen on Monday) and shut …

Picture posted by Sara Jacobi of Comm. Ave. looks like an updated picture of the famous painting "Boston Common at Twilight" (1859) by Childe Hassam. Only now with parking meters along the road instead of gas lamps and park benches. Boston Common at Twilight is one of my favorite paintings. Thanks Sara for our modern version of it.   more ›

The blizzard is underway! The blizzard of 2013 is expected to dump one to two feet of snow on the region.  Show us what it looks like on your street. Please take your camera or cellphone, stick it out a window or doorway and take a photo or a video. Then upload it to this article. You can sign in with your Patch or your Facebook account. It's easy, just click the "upload" button above and follow the directions. Be sure to include a caption for your photo that lets others know where the photo was taken. The more specific you are the better, but simply mentioning the street is fine too. Let's have some fun with this and see what we can create together. Stay warm.

Share Your Photos: How Much Snow Do You Have?

Let's measure the blizzard through lawn ornaments!

We at Patch like to have fun – even when we’re covering a story as big as the Blizzard of ’13! So when the biggest storm in years (potentially in the history of Boston weather) is headed our way, we get into battle mode – and even get a little silly. That’s what this idea is about – and we want you to take part too! A fun way we want to track the storm across Massachusetts is through lawn ornaments. They serve a purpose in the spring and summer, but often feel left out in the cold of winter. Not anymore. We are posting photos of lawn ornaments throughout Massachusetts to highlight snowfall across the commonwealth during and after the storm. All you need to do is hit the Upload Photos and Videos button and upload your own. If we’re stuck at…

It seems that this overreaction by the government and the media has the same effect as political correctness. That is to say it makes us numb to words like "racist" and "dangerous conditions".....so that when we really need to be aware of those problems....we don't hear the warning or care.   more ›

MAP: How Much Snow Has Fallen in Brookline?

Thanks to Winter Storm Nemo, Brookline is expecting up to two feet of snow this weekend! See how many inches have fallen in your area with the LIVE map below.

The map above, provided by the National Weather Service, shows snowfall in the past 24 hours. It is updated every 6 hours. This is not a map showing overall snow depth: It only tracks the amount of snow that has fallen in the past day.

Morning Forecast Puts Snow Totals Closer to 3 Feet

The winter storm is expected to build up steam after noon today, with the heaviest snowfall occurring during the Friday evening commute into Saturday.

Brookline residents waking Friday morning expecting to see a blanket of snow will be surprised to see that the streets remain clear, with just the occasional flurry drifting down. But weather forecasters maintain: The storm is coming. And when it does, it may be bigger than previously expected. A National Weather Service blizzard warning update posted early Friday morning states that the "historic winter storm and blizzard" could drop up to 3 feet of snow on the area, rather than the 1-2 feet expected yesterday. The alert covers the Boston area as well as much of eastern and southern Massachusetts, southeastern New Hampshire and all of Rhode Island. The NWS alert calls for "heavy snow ... blowing and drifting at times" with quarter-mile …

MBTA: How to Know What's Running During a Snowstorm

During severe winter weather, the MBTA may reduce its scheduling of trains, buses and other modes of transportation.

The MBTA adjusts the scheduling of all of its modes of transportation in real time during severe snow events, and the service provides several frequently-updated resources to check while the snow is coming down. With a potential blizzard on the way Friday into Saturday, the MBTA may put into effect its severe weather service plan, which includes a reduction of service on the subways, commuter rails, buses, boats and the RIDE. On the web: The MBTA provides a winter weather website which is active during major snow events. This site will provide detail of a reduction in service in real-time: MBTA.com/winter. MBTA.com is the homepage, which also displays updates. A way to find out find out whether a specific line is experiencing a reduction …
