Barney Frank: No Plans for Paid Lobbying After Congress

Frank reportedly signed with a talent agency, according to a blog on The Hill.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Barney Frank's life after Congress will not include two things: paid lobbying or work as a lawyer. Instead, Frank plans to teach, write a book, give speeches and work as a political commentator, according to a report in the Boston Herald. The Massachusetts congressman clarified his plans in a statement Wednesday after receiving questions about his future after Congress. According to a blog post on The Hill, Frank has also signed with a talent agency.  Frank closed his statement Wednesday by directing any questions to William Morris Endeavors, a talent and literacy agency run by Ari Emanuel, brother of Chicago Mayor and former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. Frank, 72, is currently serving his 16th term in …

Why should we now start believing anything Frank has to say? Has he somehow had an epiphony that character counts and honesty is expected? From the man who said he meant "renters" deserved affordable housing, and he never meant home ownership. I can't believe MA voters kept this clown in office for this long. I only hope voters see the error of their ways and instead, change the tragic course we'…   more ›

The ceremony was held on Sat., July 7 at the Newton Marriott.

Wedding bells were ringing in Newton yesterday as local Congressman Barney Frank married longtime partner Jim Ready at the Boston Marriott Hotel. According to an Associated Press report, more than 300 friends, family members and colleagues attended the ceremony, which was officiated by Governor Deval Patrick.  MSNBC noted in its coverage that this is the first same-sex marriage involving a sitting congressman. Frank, 72, has been openly gay since the mid-1980s.  Ready, 42, owns a small business for carpentry, painting and other "general handyman" services, according to the AP. Bielat to Give Election Bid Another Shot

Sean Bielat will run as a Republican in the 4th Congressional District.

After losing the Fourth Congressional District by 11 percentage points to Democrat Barney Frank in the 2010 election, Republican Sean Bielat thinks a second try in 2012 will pay off. "We started something in 2010 and we are going to finish it in 2012," Bielat told a packed room at the Attleboro Area Industrial Museum Tuesday night. The Norfolk resident will face a different opponent this time around. Frank announced in November that he would not seek re-election after 16 terms in the House of Representatives. His final re-election bid against Bielat was his closest since 1982. Frank acknowledged that redistricting played into his reason not to run. For Bielat, the loss of New Bedford and the addition of more conservative towns like …

Bielat appears to be a decent human being. More than can ever be said for Barney Frank, whose arrogance against other human beings was worn on his sleeve everytime he interacted with the public. If Bielat shows the electorate the respect that they deserve in listening to what we need (or don't need) from our government officials, then he may earn my vote. It is early and we need to hear more from…   more ›

Cindy Creem Will Not Run for Congress

State Senator Cyndy Creem confirmed today that she does not intend to run for the fourth congressional district seat.

Less than a week after Joseph Kennedy III announced he will look at a run for the Fourth District, two local pols are saying that they will not run for the seat currently held by Barney Frank.  Sen. Cindy Creem (D-Newton) told Patch today she does not intend to run for the Fourth District seat, which will be vacated at the end of 2012 when Barney Frank officially retires, and Brookline Selectman Jesse Mermell announced the same earlier today. Said Creem, "I can do much more and accomplish much more here than if I go to Washington".  In addition, Creem said the information she's received about the political "climate" in Washington D.C. has deterred her from running for Congress; here in Massachusetts, she is able to work with politicians "…

Joseph Kennedy III Eyeing Fourth District Seat

Kennedy announced today he is starting an exploratory committee for the seat.

Just over a month after Barney Frank announced he would retire at the end of this term, Joseph P. Kennedy III has added his name to the list of potential candidates.  The Huffington Post reports today that Kennedy has launched an exploratory committee for the Fourth District seat. Kennedy, 31, is also leaving his job as a prosecutor with the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office. Middlesex County Gerry Leone confirmed Kennedy's decision in a statement released this morning.  "I respect and admire Joe’s desire to serve the citizens of the Fourth Congressional District and I am confident that, if the people choose him, he will serve them with the same commitment and distinction that he has served the citizens of Middlesex County," …

Jules Levine Announces Bid for Barney Frank's Seat

Brookline local and Boston University Law professor announced his candidacy for the 4th Congressional Seat.

With Barney Frank's impending retirement, competition is beginning for his seat, and a BU Law professor and civic activist from Brookline is among those throwing their hat into the race: Julius "Jules" Levine.  Levine issued a press release earlier today, announcing his intent to run for the Democratic nomination. The release included a number of statements from people like Barney Frank himself and members of the Occupy Boston movement. In the release, he also vows "to protect Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare so that income inequality does not crush the most vulnerable among us." Herb Robinson of Newton is currently in the race, and Brookline Selectwoman Jesse Mermell has been listed as a potential candidate by some sources as well--…

Mr. Levine seems like a nice man and I wish him luck in this endeavor. However, given his long history of unsuccessful campaigns for MA state representative, Brookline School Committee, and Board of Selectmen, he seems a long shot at best to win Barney Frank's seat in the U.S. House.   more ›

Barney Frank: Changes in District Were a Factor in Retirement Decision

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank announced today he will not seek re-election in 2012.

Citing recent changes to the Fourth Congressional District, Newton Congressman Barney Frank announced this afternoon that he will not seek re-election in 2012.  Frank, 71, made the announcement today in the War Memorial Auditorium at Newton City Hall. Speaking to a sea of media, Frank said the redistricting results would require him to campaign as an incumbent in a district that "is almost half new." "[The district] is so new it makes it harder in terms of learning about new areas," Frank said.  Just last week, Governor Deval Patrick signed off on new congressional districts. The Fourth District, where Frank has been congressman for 16 terms, added more towns from Worcester and Norfolk counties such as Milford, Hopedale, Plainville, …

UPDATED: Barney Frank to Announce He is Not Running in 2012

Frank will announce in a press conference today that he will not seek re-election.

Updated 11:12 a.m. U.S. Representative Barney Frank (D-4th) will announce later today that he will not run for re-election in 2012, according to a press release issued Monday morning.  The 16-term Newton Democrat announced in February that he was planning to run in 2012. However, today's press release said he will hold a press conference this afternoon at Newton City Hall "to formally announce and answer questions about his decision not to run for re-election in 2012." The Fourth District recently saw a bit of a shift after legislators mapped out the state's new congressional districts, giving more Worcester and Norfolk county towns to Frank including Milford and part of Bellingham. Some sources report these changes were a factor in Frank'…
