Week Also Included Addresses by Michael Froman, US Ambassador Susan Rice, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. The following was written by Brittany Ritell.
Just a few days ago, Washington DC was host to a huge delegation of top leaders from around the world. No, these were not politicians here to hear President Obama’s State of the Union Address, but 2,000 teens from across 18 countries coming to participate in the largest International convention that BBYO has ever had. Of the teens present, 19 of them were from the Boston Area. These high school students celebrated president’s day weekend by listening to the state of the order from their two international presidents and electing their new international board for the coming year. Considering the enormous parallels to our American government system, it is no surprise that President Obama sent a video welcome message to the teens that were …

President Barrack Obama announced John Kerry is his choice to be Secretary of State Friday.
If President Barack Obama has his way, Massachusettts Senator John Kerry will replace Hilary Clinton as Secretary of State Obama nominated Kerry for position Friday after much speculation that the Massachusetts senator was his choice for the position. If Kerry is appointed, an interim senator will be named to the position before a special election can be held. There is also speculation that Senator Scott Brown (R-Wrentham) will run for the senate after losing the general election in November to Elizabeth Warren. A Vietnam War veteran, Kerry has served on the Foreign Relations Committee for 27 years and has been the chairman for the last six years. "He is not going to need a lot of on-the-job training," said Obama in making the nomination…

Massachusetts Democrats in Congress want to avoid cuts in benefits as part of any deal, but proposals such as raising the eligibility age for Medicare are still on the table. What would you do?
As Congress negotiates a deal to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff" on Jan. 1, Massachusetts' congressional representatives have voiced their opposition to any cuts in benefits such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, the Boston Globe reports. However, there are proposals still on the table that would change those benefit programs, including linking Social Security benefits to a more conservative inflation index that would slightly reduce annual increases, or raising the eligibility age for Medicare from 65 to 67. The Globe reported that while the Bay State's legislators were united against changes to Social Security, there's some wiggle room on Medicare. Rep. Ed Markey opposes raising the Medicare eligibility age; Rep. Michael …

In yesterday's Presidential Election, 69.6 of the town's registered voters turned out, a smaller percentage than in 2008--although a slightly larger population.
Brookline voted in yesterday's election, and the larger results are well-known by now: Following Yesterday's Barack Obama was re-elected President, Elizabeth Warren won the U.S. senate seat, Joe Kennedy III picked up the fourth congressional district seat and Watertown's Marilyn Pettito Devaney retained her Governor's Council Seat. However, the (unofficial) numbers released earlier on the town Clerk's website show some interesting things about the town when compared to other election days--specifically the Sept. 6 primaries, and the 2008 Presidential elections. Of Brookline's 40,373 voters, 28,100 showed up to vote yesterday--about 69.6 percent. A large increase compared to the primaries just two months ago, when less than 15 percent of …

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.
President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The Obama campaign won the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and surges …
A majority of voters in Massachusetts on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 11 Electoral votes.
Barack Obama won Massachusetts' 11 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Shortly after 8 p.m., the AP called Massachusetts for Obama, along with with six other east coast states and the District of Columbia. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in Massachusetts. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections. The economy was a key issue for many voters in the state, as was the Affordable Care Act, colloquially known as Obamacare. Romney cast his ballot this morning in his hometown of Belmont, …
