Four Team Brookline Non-Profits Announced

The non-profit organizations benefiting from Team Brookline for the 2013 Boston Marathon have been announced, each gets five runners.

For next year's Boston Marathon, four Brookline non-profits will team up to benefit from twenty local runners--and now we know who those non-profits are. The town receives a group of marathon racing numbers, or waivers, each year. Under the new program, a managing organization would recruit, train and support runners from a number of non-profit organizations from Brookline--including their own. The aim is to make a more community-wide program.  The "number of non-profits" is now four, and the four organizations are: The Brookline Education Foundation, Brookline Teen Center, Brookline Library Foundation and the Brookline Community Mental Health Center--which is managing the team. The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously last night to accept…

The Brookline Community Mental Health Center will be collecting applications for another few days.

If you're gathering steam for the marathon, but not in the mood to train alone, you could always join a team--such as Team Brookline, although time for that is running out. The deadline for non-profits to join Team Brookline's application process is coming up: Oct. 24, which is this Wednesday. Interested runners can still apply. The town receives a group of marathon racing numbers, or waivers, each year. Under the new program, a managing organization would recruit, train and support runners from a number of non-profit organizations from Brookline--including their own. The aim is to make a more community-wide program.  The minimum fundraising requirement for runners is $5,000. Half-Marathon Coming Through Brookline This Weekend

A 13.1-mile run along the Emerald Necklace coming through during the Columbus Day weekend.

The Boston Athletics Association is bringing runners back through Brookline, although only half as long as in April--distance-wise, anyway. This race is the third leg of what the BAA calls the "Distance Medley," which is made up of the BAA 5k, the BAA 10k and this weekend's Half-Marathon.  The program is more or less the same as last year's 13.1-mile race. The course starts and ends in Franklin Park, and travels along the Emerald necklace past Jamaica Pond and along Olmsted Park in Brookline. The first runners are expected to hit Brookline at around 9:30 a.m. Roads near the Emerald Necklace--along the Muddy river, including Olmsted Park and the Riverway--will begin to close early on Sunday morning, and are expected to re-open throughout …

Team Brookline Accepting Marathon Applications

The Brookline Community Health Center will run the town's team for next year's Boston Marathon. Applications open today.

For next year's Boston Marathon, several Brookline non-profits will team up to benefit from local runners--and they will do so with the help of Brookline Community Mental Health Center (BCMHC), which is running the Team Brookline program.  The Center, and the Town, will start accepting applications for both runners and non-profits interested in participating in Team Brookline today, Sept. 18, according to a press release from the BCMHC sent yesterday afternoon. "We really see this as an opportunity to increase the impact of the waivers, and what it will mean for people within the community who need the support." BCMHC Vice President for Development Nancy Vineberg explained, "That, ultimately, is what the Marathon program has been all about…

Boston Marathon Team Brookline a "Start-Up"

Selectmen approve a plan to have the Brookline Community Mental Health Center run the town's participation in the BAA Boston Marathon

For next year's Boston Marathon, some runners from town will have help from the Brookline Community Mental Health Center (BCMHC).  The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously last night--despite some initial dissent--to negotiate with BCHMC to act as the managing organization in charge of the "Team Brookline" runners for charity in the 2013 Boston Athletics Association annual Marathon. The town receives a group of marathon racing numbers, or waivers, each year. Under the new program, a managing organization would recruit, train and support runners from a number of non-profit organizations from Brookline--including their own. The aim is to make a more community-wide program.  "There have been many [charitable] organizations worthy." Town …

Tuesday's Board of Selectmen meeting was a marathon-and-a-half this week, as they spoke with a representative of the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) about two upcoming activities: the 2012 Half-Marathon and the 2013 Boston Maraton. The BAA's half-marathon is returning to Brookline, Oct. 7, which is also Columbus Day weekend.  The program is more or less the same as last year's 13.1-mile race. The course starts and ends in Franklin Park, and travels along the Emerald necklace past Jamaica Pond and along Olmsted Park in Brookline. The first runners are expected to hit Brookline at around 9:30 a.m. BAA Race Director Josh Nemzer told the board, "we’re very excited: the half-marathon sold out in record time."
