Rex Trailer Dies at 84; Share Your Memories, Photos

Boston TV icon hosted a children's show in the 1950s-1970s. Do you have any photos from back in the day?

Rex Trailer, a Boston TV icon who had been recovering from pneumonia recently, has died. Trailer hosted “Boomtown,” a children’s show with a Western theme on WBZ-TV from 1956-1974.  How did a Western cowboy make his mark in Boston? According to Wikipedia, his corporate overlords gave him a choice of Cleveland or Boston. But he's remembered for more than his cowboy get-up. The Boston Globe wrote in an editorial last year: Kids adored Trailer’s rodeo tricks. But mostly they adored him for his consistent kindness and competence. Trailer was 84. A funeral is being planned, but no date has been set yet, according to his website.  Meantime, what are your memories of Rex Trailer? Did you ever meet him or have your picture taken with him? If…

I remember Boomtown well and can still sing the theme song, but does anyone remember that Rex hosted a Saturday afternoon bowling show from Bowlers World in Framingham.( RT 9 east at the current site of Legal Seafood) in the 60's. I was thrilled to appear on the show. It is difficult to imagine now, but bowling was huge in Massachusetts in the 50s and 60s. Rex's show was 10pin, but Candlepins …   more ›

It saddens me deeply that this young man is no longer with us. May G-d give his parents the strength to survive this preventable accident and for his passing to be a lesson to the BU campus and the our entire community of cyclists. Bicycle People, you certainly have "the right of way" but that does no good carved on your head stone! Cars, and in this instance a TRUCK have so much weight that an …   more ›

America Loses A 'Reluctant Hero' — Neil Armstrong, 1930-2012 [POLL]

Vote in our Patch Poll on the legacy of Neil Armstrong's historic first steps on the moon.

His family called him "a reluctant American hero,' who was just doing his job. But Neil A. Armstrong, who died Saturday of complications from heart bypass surgery, certainly was a hero. He was just shy of his 39th birthday when he lumbered down the ladder from the Apollo 11 spacecraft and stepped onto the stark lunar landscape on July 20, 1969. "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," he said, as Americans around the country watched in awe at the live footage from dark space, so far away. That step fulfilled a challenge President John F. Kennedy issued in the early 1960s —to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. Armstrong began his career as a Navy fighter pilot and test pilot before being tapped for a highly …

Family, Friends and BC Community Say Goodbye to Franco Garcia

"He was my teddy bear." As Boston College student Katherine Corteselli shared memories of her best friend Franco Garcia, young college students sat alongside professors, priests, police officers and family members, dabbing tear-filled eyes with each recollection.  "He gave the absolute best hugs...what I'm going to miss the most are those hugs," Corteselli said during today's funeral Mass for Garcia. Hundreds of people -- whether they knew Garcia or not -- flooded a St. Ignatius Church in Chestnut Hill this morning to say one last goodbye to the Boston College student whose life was tragically cut short when he drowned in the Chestnut Hill Reservoir.  Garcia, 21, was a West Newton resident, a chemistry major and member of the school's …

Brookline Remembers Mike Wallace's Softer Side

Mike Wallace's hardball style was tempered by a side which some Brookline residents experienced. Share your stories.

Though he may be remembered for an aggressive interview style, Mike Wallace, journalist and Brookline native, had a softer side as well.  Among Wallaces interviews are people like Alduous Huxley and Salvador Dali--to name just a few. The Boston Phoenix Blog described some of his exploits as Chuck Norries-esque, positing that he may be the journalistic equivalent of the martial arts star.  However, today's Boston Globe obituary described the softer side of Brookline-native Myron "Mike" Wallace, who graduated from Brookline High in 1935 by way of the Runkle School, and summered on Martha's Vineyard. In the piece, he is described as "a pussycat" and "a good guy" by Brookline residents who met him.  Wallace's Stepson, Eames Yates, told the …
