This is a great article. If your financial institution has guarantees on fraudulent charges and theyRead More try to stick you with the bill or change certain terms and conditions without consideration or notice, make sure you seek legal advice from an attorney. The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Kent Frederick April 23, 2014 at 11:59 am
Observor, It may have been Walt Williams who said that the problem with affirmative action is thatRead More it can set up a kid to fail. Schools that serve large groups of minorities often do not prepare a kid for an elite school, whehter it's a private school like Harvard or Duke, or an elite public school like Michigan or Cal-Berkeley. He suggested that a student, regardless of race or color, should always select a school that is suited to his qualifications. Someone from an inner-city school in California would be better off going to a university in the California State University system, rather than a school in the University of California system. The idea is that he can succeed in college and move on to a successful career. If a person ill-prepared for Berkeley or UCLA attends either of those schools, he has a greater likelihood of flunking out and giving up on higher education. My father attended a 1-room school house until the 6th grade. He then attended a rural junior high and high school. He wound up going to a land-grant university 11 years after graduating from high school, courtesy of the GI Bill. Because of his going to a school that, while good in the field of agriculture, was an average university overall, he was able to move into management eventually transferred to Chicago. So, I attended a very good suburban high school that prepared me for the University of Michigan. If he had gone to a school for which he wasn't prepared, he could very well have dropped out, which would have meant no management opportunity or transfer to Chicago. I know a lot of very successful people who went to small, liberal arts colleges or public universities that aren't of the same caliber as Michigan, UCLA, or the University of Illinois. Yes, going to a school like Michigan, Harvard, Duke, Northwestern, or Stanford can lead to great opportunities. But, going to a non-elite college or university doesn't close the doors on those opportunities.
Kim McCoy April 23, 2014 at 01:53 pm
Maria Young, I think you're on to something there. Since the activist judges are forcing one statesRead More marriage laws onto other states, I think it only fitting that the judgement of the Supreme Court should apply to every state. No state should be allowed to practice affirmative action now...NONE.
"The Black Panther of Poetry" April 23, 2014 at 01:58 pm
Fair is Fair!!! Now if we can only get Affirmative Action totally out of such sports as BasketballRead More and Football and the Music industry, to name a few, which African-Americans are by far the most innovative and talented and who very essence has kept it alive so that others could thrive and benefit from. The minorities in these financially lucrative areas of our society is truly and obviously inferior but yet is given a shoe in because there race promotes, finance and overly spectates in these Professions by default in a sense because they have the "wherewithall" to do so because of centuries of discrimination and also present discrimination and Social Stratification.

Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 01:57 pm
Fred Austin, all you did was cut and paste from the Common Core website. It claims that teachers ,Read More parents, administrators..."provided input", but it does NOT say Who. At what point. Who paid them to give their opinion? What were their qualifications? At least I provided two names, Jim Milgrim and Sandra Slotsky, their function (the ONLY content specialists on the validation committee) , and the fact that they refused to sign off on the standards. I also provided a link to a documentary that IS anti- common core, but if you refuse to watch it at all for that reason, then you arent really open to hearing anything you dont want to hear. I linked it BECASUE Sandra Slotsky and Jim Milgrim are interviewed in it about exactly what they found objectionable. You won't find that out by reading the CC website.
CowDung April 23, 2014 at 01:59 pm
Jennifer: I provided a list the 'who's' from Wisconsin that participated. They aren't on theRead More national CC website because each state selected their own teams to provide input toward the development of the Common Core standards.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 02:04 pm
It also says "State education chiefs and Governors came together to develop the Common core. NoRead More governor actually sat down and wrote anything. What it should say is that "Two organizations, state education chiefs, plus the National Governors Association,, agreed to allow consultants paid for by Bill Gates and Achieve, among other corporate interests, to write standards for all American Children without input from child development experts or content specialists> They then agreed to allow this group of corporate interests to pay for experts to validate the standards they had created. Some prominent educators refused to do so, so they were expunged from the record. " That would be more accurate than the PR you cut and pasted from the CC website.

@Tim H: Such a great point on the text-to-speech. I haven't explored this fully yet, but I justRead More started an Audible account. I downloaded a Doctor Who book with my free credit. But I got the Audible account for precisely what you said: Being able to read, switch to listening, then go back to reading. Maybe another blog post is in the works......
Tim H April 23, 2014 at 11:52 am
@Danielle, the audible only works good on your smartphone or an MP3 player. You can use it at theRead More gym when reading may not be as convenient (try rowing while reading -- listening works). Or go for a walk outdoors while listening to a book... just be careful crossing streets. I believe there are pronunciations issues with the text-to-speech as it tries to simulate speech instead of being an actual recording like the audio books. Each has it's advantages.
