What Were the Most Popular Names in Massachusetts?

The top five names for babies in Massachusetts in 2010 returned in 2011, but in a different order.

Maybe it the Royal Wedding had something to do with the top boys name in Massachusetts – William – but his bride's name, Kate (or Catherine), was no where to be found in the top five. The Social Security Administration released the top baby names in the Bay State 2011 this week. Last week they released the top names in the country, which can be seen here. The top five girls names in Massachusetts all made the top five nationally. At the top of both lists was Sophia. Olivia was second in the state followed by Olivia, Isabella, Emma and Ava. In the United States, Isabella was second on the list, next came Emma, then Olivia and finally Ava. William placed third nationally in the top boy's names, while the most popular boys name in the U.S., …

Brookline's Best Grillables are at...

Based on the poll numbers, the finest foods to toss on the grill are here in Brookline, at the Meat House.

The answer seemed a little obvious from the start: when Brookline goes to look for its grillables, one name came up in comments on Facebook and Twitter. The Poll results matched that. According to our poll, the best spot for food to throw on the grill is none other than The Meat House!  The voting numbers were small this week, with 13 votes total, 10 of which went to the winner. Second place went to Wulf's Fish Market and third to The Butcherie. No new reviews, and no comments on the poll made Meat House a clear winner. The other poll winners thus far: The best day trip is the JFK National Historic Site; the best Mother's Day brunch at Zaftigs Delicatessen; Finesse Florist, the finest florist; TerraVino the top Wine shop in Coolidge Corner…

Brookline High School Dean Files Discrimination Complaint

The Sagamore High School paper reports that Brookline High's Dean of Students filed a complaint after the Headmaster selection process.

Brookline High School named a new headmaster in early February, and in early April, Dean of Students Adrian Mims filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, as Brookline High's The Sagamore reports.  See the exclusive full story on The Sagamore.  According to The Sagamore, which acquired Mims' case information through the Freedom of Information Act, one of the Particulars in the case alleges that a member of the interview team told Mims they felt the school was "not ready" for an African-American to take headmaster role.  The High School ultimately hired former Newton North Vice-Principal, Deborah Holman, following the Retirement of Dr. Bob Weintraub in June.

Hazmat Report at 70 Centre Street, Brookline

Brookline police, fire and EMS respond to a hazmat incident in Coolidge Corner which sent two to hospital and displaced a handful of residents.

A report of a paint-like chemical smell came in over the scanner at around 10 p.m. Thursday night. Police, fire and EMS were on scene at 70 Centre Street, an apartment building with a current construction project.  While fire crews examined the interior of the building, police blocked Centre Street from Wellman to Williams, and EMTs tended to those affected at the intersection of Shailer and Harvard Streets. The contractor arrived at about 10:30 p.m.  The incident displaced at least 10 people from the home, and two were sent to the hospital after being decontaminated. Scanner reports indicate that the smell may have been xylene, which Wikipedia says is a solvent used to clean metal, and is flammable.

I listened to the entire incident unfold and it was 100% professional. No panic and everyone worked together including the residents. If there is a bright spot of any bad event, this is definitely one of them.   more ›
