The Right Side of The Bar: Tips & Tricks To Stay On Your Bartenders Good Side

It’s the bottom of the ninth, the bases are loaded, and you’re about to strike out with the guy or gal pouring your drinks. Maintaining a healthy relationship with your bartender is the key to a successful night out. Otherwise, you can predict a long evening of wishing and waiting for your bud light, while the others around you receive 5-star service.

The Do’s and Don’ts

Snaps & Whistles: Although this may be a wonderful way to attract the attention of your rambunctious puppy, this approach doesn’t go so far with the master behind the bar. May we point out that this is the one individual who has the power to change your night…in the snap of a finger.  Be pleasant, make eye contact, and be polite. You would be surprised at how far that will get you, and how quickly you’ll have your dirty martini. Just remember, in a crowded bar, the variable at play is your ability to get the bartender’s attention---so be creative!

Loud & Clear: This is exactly what the bartender will make it when they are ready to take your drink order. Look out for some eye contact and wait patiently. We can make a pretty good bet that if they haven’t made direct eye contact with you, they may not be ready to take your order. So hollering and screaming won’t get you too far!

Be Prepared: Finally, you’ve got the bartenders attention! So, now what? After waiting so long you would assume you had all the time in the world to pick out that perfect beverage---but suddenly you’re at a loss for words. Make sure you know what you want, and if you are ordering for 7 of your buddies, make sure you have it down. Ordering a drink doesn’t have to be an art form or a project and plus, you’ve got some drinking to do anyways, so no time should be wasted!

Keep it Simple: Here is a quick scenario: its way past midnight and the bar is fully packed. Do you order an elaborate drink or settle for a beer? Ultimately the choice is yours - but beware that your patience may run dry. Put yourself in your bartender’s shoes and know that kindness goes a long way—even when there’s a long line.
