Newbury College Alum to Raise Scholarship Money via Boston Marathon Run

Ben Weiner hopes to raise $10,000.

Newbury College announces that 2012 alumnus, Ben Weiner, has been chosen to run the 2014 Boston Marathon on April 21 on behalf of the College and has committed to raise $10,000 for its Scholarship Program.

Newbury College obtained a bib number for the 2014 Boston Marathon to give to an alumnus of the College to raise much-needed funds for scholarships. With 94% of current students requiring financial aid, raising scholarship dollars is essential in assuring that Newbury students are capable of meeting their educational goals.  Alumnus, Ben Weiner, is prepared for the challenge and has pledged to raise at least $10,000 for Newbury’s scholarship program.

For Weiner, Newbury College and its community are very important.  When asked why he wants to run this year’s Marathon, he said, “It would be my honor to run for Newbury College to prove that anyone can overcome the toughest of obstacles, even after a severe tragedy such as the Boston bombings.  When I cross that finish line I hope to cross for every proud member of Newbury’s community.”

Weiner grew up in Barrington, Rhode Island and came to Newbury to get a bachelor’s degree in Pre-Law, with minors in English, Psychology, and Social Sciences.  He was very involved in campus life, serving as president of his class, orientation leader, admissions ambassador and a three-sport athlete.  Weiner now resides in Brighton, Massachusetts, and as an avid runner, he has competed in several long distance runs, and he is ready for his longest run to support Newbury College.

"We are so proud to have an alum putting his body to the test and running such an iconic marathon as Boston in support of our scholarship students,” says Catie Fauvelle, Director of Special Events and Alumni Relations at Newbury College.  “His commitment to Newbury as an alumnus is a testament to how special the Newbury community is. The Alumni Association is very excited for Ben and will be there cheering for him on Marathon Monday."
