Student Success: Brookline Students Named to Dean's Lists – June 3

Max Queen of Chestnut Hill, MA will exhibit work as a recent graduate of the School of Art and Design in "Profile 2012," an exhibition of selected work, at the Museum of Arts and Design, 2 Columbus Circle, New York City.

Queen is the son of Michael & Deborah Queen and a graduate of Brookline High School.

An opening reception will be held from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, May 31, in the seventh floor event space at the Museum of Arts and Design.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 11 am Thursday, May 31, through 6 pm Sunday, June 3, during regular museum hours. The admission fee for the Museum will be waived for those visiting "Profile 2012" or attending the opening reception.

Exhibitors were selected by faculty recommendations and curators Anne Currier, professor of ceramic art, and Sharon McConnell, director of the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery at the School of Art & Design.

"An exhibition like Profile 2012 at the Museum of Arts and Design provides a unique and significant experience for our recent graduates. These young artists will represent the range and quality of the work produced in the BFA program in the School of Art and Design. They will also have the experience of participating in professional exhibition in NYC where their work will be seen in the context of the epicenter of contemporary art practice.," said Leslie Bellavance, dean of the School.

Earlier this month, more than 100 students exhibited their work in the annual Senior Shows.

"The School of Art & Design thanks the exhibitors for allowing their work to be shown in New York City, and greatly appreciates the support of Michele and Marty Cohen that has made possible this showcase for the work of our graduates to a broader audience," Bellavance said.

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth undergraduate commencement was on May 27. An estimated 1,573 graduates received degrees.

Roxana Saberi, an award-winning author, journalist, and human rights advocate who was jailed by the Iranian regime in 2009, delivered the 112th Commencement address.

The following local students have achieved Dean's Honors, a recognition for students who have earned a grade point average of at least 3.66, or Dean's High Honors, a recognition for students who have earned a grade point average of at least 3.78, for the 2012 spring semester at Connecticut College.

 The Trinity College Chapel served as the site for the school's 62nd annual Honors Day Ceremony, where members of the Trinity community were cited for their scholarly and community-oriented achievements. The honorees were presented with a broad array of prizes and awards for their contributions and accomplishments over their years at Trinity.

Courtney Chaloff of Chestnut Hill, MA, Class of 2012, won The Richard K. Morris Book Award for Excellence in Education, given annually to the member of the senior class who best fulfills the following qualifications: communicates effectively, stimulates inquiry, demonstrates excellence in scholarship, manifests moral and ethical attitudes toward professional responsibility, and participates in community activities in an educational capacity. This award is given by the Trinity Education Graduate Association in honor of the late Richard K. Morris, a former Professor of Education.

Michelle Okun of Brookline, MA, Class of 2012, won The Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin Prize in Jewish Studies, awarded annually for excellence in Jewish Studies to a member of the junior or senior class. The prize is in memory of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and given by Berel and Helen Lang in honor of Sarah Stamm Lang.

The ceremony originated when George Keith Funston, who served as Trinity College President from 1945 to 1951, sought to re-establish the school's academic pageantry, which had been halted during World War II.

Matriculation and the Book Ceremony for first-year students were restored, and in the spring of 1950, Honors Day was added as a new event. It was intended to be an occasion when all Trinity prizes and awards -- with the exception of those handed out at Commencement ­ could be celebrated in the presence of the entire College community.

Gordon Santry of Chestnut Hill graduated from Westminster School during the school's 124th commencement ceremony held May 26 on the campus in Simsbury.

Hosana Mamata of Brookline, Mass., a junior majoring in biology, was named a Presidential Scholar for the spring 2012 semester at Clarkson University.

Presidential Scholars must achieve a minimum 3.80 grade-point average and carry at least 14 credit hours.

At the University of Rhode Island's 126th Commencement on Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20, 2012, almost 3,000 undergraduate and 738 graduate students became the University's newest alumni.

The following local residents were among the students who received their undergraduate or graduate degrees:

• Pamela Cady, a resident of Brookline, MA received a MS degree in Environmental Science: Geoscience .

Students who received the honor summa cum laude graduated with a cumulative grade point average (GPA ) of at least 3.7; students who received the honor of magna cum laude graduated with a GPA of at least 3.50; and students who received the honor of cum laude graduated with a GPA of at least 3.3.

 Alexander Jacobs of Chestnut Hill, graduated from Bowdoin College, majoring in Classical Studies and Philosophy and minoring in Economics.

Devon F. Shatkin, of Brookline, was among the 584 students awarded a degree at St. Lawrence University's Commencement ceremony, held May 20 on campus in Canton, New York. Shatkin was awarded a degree (cum laude) in African studies-anthropology, with a minor in sport study/exercise science. Shatkin graduated from Brookline High School.

The Commencement speakers were Garry Trudeau, creator of comic strip Doonesbury and Mary DiSanto-Rose, associate professor of dance at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Both received honorary degrees at the ceremony, and the North Country Citation was awarded to Martha Swan, founder of John Brown Lives, a history organization.
