Mass. Pike Closures Coming

Beginning Sunday night for about six months, lanes will be closed in order to create work zones for substructure rehabilitation work.

On Sunday, MassDOT will begin the process to install barrier for the required Eastbound and Westbound closures on Interstate 90 from Commonwealth Avenue to Dalton Street in order to improve the median and the substructure of the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge over the Interstate. The process will be ongoing throughout the next twelve months leading into the replacement of the Commonwealth Avenue deck over I-90 which is slated to take place in late 2015.

Beginning Sunday night for approximately six months, the left lanes in both Eastbound and Westbound directions will be closed to traffic in order to create work zones for substructure rehabilitation work. Closure of the right lanes in both directions will follow upon the reopening of the left lanes. Three lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction on I-90 Eastbound and Westbound during peak hours.

The left lane closure will begin at 9 PM on Sunday. Short-term duration (nighttime and weekends) closures of an additional lane on I-90 Eastbound and Westbound may take place as allowed.

The Commonwealth Avenue Bridge was constructed in 1962 and supports Commonwealth Avenue Westbound traffic, the MBTA Green Line, and Commonwealth Avenue Eastbound traffic.

Work to be performed throughout this project will include minor rehabilitation of the east and west abutments, as well as major rehabilitation of the east and west piers. The project will also include reconstruction of the median of I-90.
