2013 US Amateur Golf Tournament Coming to Brookline

Brookline Country Club will host the 2013 Amateur tournament around this time next year, expecting over 200 golfers.

Over 200 amateur golfers will compete next August to be the best, as will host the 2013 Amateur Tournament--along with the  in Newton.

Slated for Aug. 9, 2013, and running through Aug. 18, the tournament will attract mostly college-aged kids coming from 18 different countries around the globe, according to Sandy Tierney, head of the event planning committee.

Country Club General Manager David Chag commented, "Some of the players, today, we don’t recognize their name; but soon enough they will be the Phil Mickelsons and Tiger Woods of the world."

The tournament will be broadcast on the Golf Channel and on NBC, as well as having live spectators. Based on previous tournaments, organizers expect about 1000 spectators in the early days of the tournament, which they hope could grow to between 3,000 and 3,500 if a local player does particularly well.

Compared to 1999's Ryder Cup, officials expect this to be a far less disruptive event, and the Country Club intends to use existing infrastructure.

"One of the major focuses in the preparation is a transportation plan to minimize traffic and parking in town," Tierney explained.

To that end, they anticipate shuttles to bring golfers and their friends and family to the course from their Boston hotels. They are also working with police, fire and emergency services to guarantee safety during the event.

Said Deputy Town Administrator Sean Cronin, "What does this cost the town? Nothing. It’s part of their budget, and the costs will be borne by country club."

Tierney said that, as chair, his goal is to break even. He said that they intend to donate any extra money to golf-related charities and local organizations like the Brookline Community Foundation.

According to a memo sent to the Selectmen, organizers are also hoping to plan a number of golf-related events around town, such as screening 2005's The Greatest Game ever Played at the , bringing a guest speaker to the, and golf-themed summer reading lists.
