Brookline Issues Tick Advisory

Last year, 12 people contracted Lyme disease from tick bites in Brookline.

The Brookline Department of Public Health on Tuesday issued a tick advisory, saying it has received several reports of ticks early this season.

Last year, 12 people contracted Lyme disease from tick bites in Brookline, the department said. There were about 460 cases of Lyme disease in all of Norfolk County last year.

The ticks that carry diseases are most likely found in brushy, wooded, or high grassy areas. Ticks are most active from May through October, but can be active in any month when the temperature is above freezing. The department issued the following tips to prevent and address ticks:

  • Wear protective clothing when outdoors
  • Use a repellent
  • Check for ticks on you, your family, your pets
  • Seek medical care if you experience unexplained symptoms such as a rash, fever, muscle pain
