Jumper Closes Lanes, Backs Up Traffic on Pike

Significant traffic congestion on Saturday afternoon was caused when a person threatened to jump from an overpass onto the Massachusetts Turnpike.

The Massachusetts Turnpike was closed on the westbound side for a time on Saturday in the area of the Commonwealth Avenue overpass and Mountfort Street bridge because a person was atop the bridge, threatening to jump.

Photos posted to Twitter showed several fire trucks on the Pike, and other photos showed rescuers setting up an airbag under the bridge.

In addition to causing congestion on the Pike, it also tied up traffic on Commonwealth Avenue, just over the Brookline town line.
