Brookline Arrests: Downed Basketball Hoop, Flooded Jail Cell, And Some Failed Shoplifters

The following reports detail all Brookline Police Department arrests from July 27 through Aug. 1. Suspects are innocent until proven guilty.

• Warrant – Bruce Walker Beveridge, 45, of 406 Beech Street, Rockland, was arrested around 8:30 p.m. near Beacon Street and Park Drive on a straight warrant out of Plymouth. Officer Russell O'Neil made the arrest.

• Persistent Shoplifting – John Daryl Howard, 40, of 223 Geneva Ave., Apt. 3 Dorchester, was arrested around 6 p.m. at 730 Commonwealth Avenue and charged with shoplifting and receiving stolen property valued at less than $250. According to police, Howard tried to return two items, a box of CVS brand Providone valued at $14.29 and a bottle of Neuragen Gel valued at $35.99, to the CVS at 730 Commonwealth Avenue, but was turned away because the price tags were removed and he didn't have a receipt. Officers questioned Howard and determined that he had also tried to return the item at a CVS on Longwood Avenue. On searching him, officers also reportedly found a second bottle of Neuragen Gel and a box of candy with a price tag linking it to a CVS in Dorchester. The manager of the Dorchester store reportedly conducted an inventory and determined that three similar items were stolen from there earlier in the day. Officer Russell O'Neil made the arrest.
• Leaving The Scene – Brittany Tiara Johnson-Hendricks, 20, of 112 Wellington Hill St., Mattapan, was arrested around 7:30 p.m. on Dale Street and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and breaking and entering with intent to commit a misdemeanor. According to police, Johnson-Hendricks crashed a van into a basketball hoop at the end of Hillside Road and left the car, running and still in gear, while fleeing toward Warren Street. When police found her, Johnson-Hendricks was sitting in another car on Country Road. A witness also told officers they had been standing outside their home when they observed Johnson-Hendricks walk out the front door and walk down the street. Police reported that the suspect was "incoherent" while answering questions, "talking but not making any sense." Officer Barry McNeilly made the arrest.
• No License – Mohamed Fayez Ibrahim, 28, of 270 Babcock Street, Boston, was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on Babcock Street and charged with operating without a license. Officer David Hill made the arrest.
• Rape – Michael Thomas Melville, 53, of 90 Longwood Ave., #4F, was arrested around 6:30 p.m. and charged with rape. Detective Jennifer Paster made the arrest.

• Child Services – A 15-year-old was placed in custody around 10:30 p.m. under a warrant for Child in Need of Services. Detective Carlos Crespo handled the case.
• Suspended License – Kenneth Michael Stoddard, 43, of 120 Phillips St., Attleboro, was arrested around 3 p.m. near Aspinwall and Brookline avenues and charged with operating after suspension. Officer John Canney made the arrest.
• Frying Pan To Fire – James Martin, 33, of 5 Pickering Avenue, Roxbury, was arrested around 12 p.m. near Naples Road and Harvard Street for operating after suspension and malicious damage of property. Martin was reportedly pulled over after he turned onto Harvard Street from Shailer Street without yielding to traffic, including a Brookline Police cruiser. While he was being booked for driving with a suspended license, Martin reportedly triggered the fire sprinklers in his cell, soaking himself and damaging the booking area of the police station. Martin also had two default warrants. Officer Mario Serrano made the arrest.
• Wrong Turn – Jayson Woodford Batting, 36, of 25 Locust St., #602, Haverhill, was arrested around 2 a.m. near Beacon and Centre streets on a warrant out of Woburn and cited with making a left turn violation. Officer Michael Fay made the arrest.
• Puzzle Shop Assault – Jason Fitzgerald Korb, 28, of 2331 Cathedral Ave. NW, Apt. 202, Washington D.C., was arrested around 11:30 a.m. on the 1300 block of Beacon Street and charged with indecent assault and battery of a child over 14, assault and battery and trespassing. Korb is accused of groping a young employee at Eureka! Puzzles and following her into the store's basement when she tried to get away from him. Read the full story. • Caught On Tape – Jerome Childs, 43, of 6 Stone Terrace, #6, Dorchester, was arrested around 7:15 p.m. at 400 Washington Street and charged with shoplifting. Childs was reportedly caught on tape casually walking out of the Brookline Village CVS with a boxed TV he had taken off a shelf and set on the floor while another man paid for his purchases at the cash register. When Childs was stopped further down Cypress Street, he was reportedly carrying the TV and two men's watches with price tags from CVS. Employees also reported seeing Childs take the TV without paying and leave the store with the other man, who reportedly left in a green SUV. Police have not yet located the second suspect. • Warrants – Laura Brandy McNulty was arrested around 6:45 p.m. near the Muddy River on two warrants out of Chelsea and Peabody. Detective Keith Lacy made the arrest.
• Harassment – Helmer Mosquera Jr., 35, of 116 Spring Street, West Roxbury, was arrested around 3 p.m. near 110 Cypress St. and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and criminal harassment. Officer Julie McDonnell made the arrest.
• Suspended License – Jay Allan Guzzi, 31, of 30 Orchid Road, Brookline, was arrested around 11 a.m. near 1125 Boylston St. and charged with operating after suspension and speeding. Officer John Canney made the arrest.

• That's No Mercedes – Jose M. Lopez, 25, of 138 Alton Marotta Way, #6098, South Boston, was arrested around 12 noon near Harvard Street and Longwood Avenue and charged with operating after suspension, attaching plates, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and failure to yield to pedestrians in a cross walk. Lopez was reportedly pulled over after an officer observed him turn right on to Longwood Avenue and drive through the path of three pedestrians who had already entered a marked crosswalk. When the officer ran the plates for Lopez's car, a late model BMW Coupe, it came for a 1992 Mercedes-Benz. Police also determined that Lopez's license expired in 2009.
