Brookline Dance Studio Owner Gets Creative

Brookline business owner, Gina Fay, and the owner of DanceFIT Studio, leads dozens of weekly fitness classes for her client base that stretches from California to Massachusetts “and about 20% of the states in-between and even several countries.”

And nobody leaves the comfort of their home.

In 2010, Gina’s growing family meant less time — less time to travel back and forth to her award winning studio without sacrificing moments with her two young boys. She in turn started teaching virtual on-line fitness classes through Skype. The result is a growing community of moms, working professionals and women who go to their gym simply by clicking “login.”

“I had friends always telling me that simply getting to the gym was too difficult,” Gina said. “Our program and classes cuts out the travel time and allows people to choose a wide range of fitness classes that they take wherever they want.”

The biggest benefit, according to Gina, is that unlike a fitness DVD all of her clients receive live feedback from the instructors.

“The instructors are there to demonstrate and correct each person’s technique, as well as motivate them throughout the workout,” said Gina.  “Like any form of exercise, if a movement is done improperly it can lead to injury, and by having an instructor monitor your every move while simultaneously performing the move it can certainly offset the risk of injury.”

Gina added, “It is also too easy to turn off a DVD or youtube video.  The instructor, and each person taking the class, serve as someone who will hold you accountable for sticking with it and ultimately getting the results you want.”

Gina’s staff of seven virtual instructors reside locally as well as in Colorado and California “which helps to accommodate the different time zones that our clients take classes from,” said Gina.

Class sizes typically range between six and eight participants all with different backgrounds, fitness levels and goals.  Her upcoming fall classes include, Lower Body Tone, Arms & Abs, CardioFIT Boot Camp, BalletFIT, Mat Pilates, CountryFIT Yoga and Morning Stretch.

Gina’s experience and knowledge has also allowed  her to modify workouts for clients who are pregnant or have pre-existing injuries.

“What has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the program,” according to Gina, “is seeing all of these women from all over the world become friends. They motivate each other, and it is a fun environment to be a part of.”

A quick search of her DanceFIT Studio Facebook page certainly confirms that with numerous posts of women sharing photos, well wishes, workout stories that usually start with, “wow, I am sore”, recipes and even child advice.

“It really is a lot of fun,” said Gina. “I have such a great relationship with all of my clients who take classes in our studio in Brookline, and I was afraid the virtual classes would be completely different, but it has been great to meet so many awesome people and be able to provide them with a new and convenient workout alternative.”
