OTP Playwriting Workshop: Henry & Vanessa Unbound by Howard Zilber

About the Workshop:

The OTP Playwriting Workshops are once a month public readings which provide our community a rare look into various stages of the playwriting process and an open forum for questions, conversation & continued development following every workshop. Following 2 in-depth rehearsals to establish basic movement, arc and character choices with a monthly Guest Director, the 2013 Resident Actors bring to life the new & original scripts.

The objective of the workshop is to provide the playwrights constructive & creative feedback to inform the future potential of each play we feature. Through talk backs and continued dialogues featured through TheOpenTheatre.com with the Resident Actors, Guest Directors, the Playwright & our community we hope to keep our audience involved in where the piece goes with OTP. As we look into our future, be looking for OTP Original Productions featuring plays discovered with the Playwriting Workshops.

About the Play:

Henry is a playwright. Vanessa is an economist. They joke around about throwing a dinner party in which the guests are calculated to clash with each other. From joking they move to actually carrying out the experiment. They invite over two couples. Les Croucher is a dentist and his wife, Phyllis Croucher is an aspiring children’s book author. Les is a brute that dominates his wife. Frances Gold and Felix Gaucher are the other couple. She is a professor of political linguistics, a full-throated feminist and was a dominatrix in college. Felix is left leaning and mild mannered political theorist. The predicted confrontation takes place and we get to the very edge of physical violence. Along the way deep lurking repressed psychology is revealed and expressed. When the party ends and Henry and Vanessa confront what they have done they stand at the very edge of divorce.
