Friday Night Lights: Mountains of Laws: Shabbat, Sinai, and the Challenge of Meaning

Is there a way that ancient ideas of Shabbat laws can be a resource for our practices today? Law constrains us and law provides us with meaning. Beginning with the American-Jewish legal theorist Robert Cover, turning to the week's Torah portion Mishpatim, and then to a few Shabbat laws, we will examine this dilemma of law. 

Jane Kanarek is Assistant Professor of Rabbinics at the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College. She grew up down the street from Temple Ohabei Shalom and is a Lawrence School and Brookline High graduate. Rabbi Kanarek received her rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary and her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on biblical exegesis in rabbinic literature, legal theory, feminist readings of Talmud, and methodologies of teaching Talmud. She is a member of the Boston University Masters Swim Team and lives in Brookline with her husband and son.

Services begin at 6:00pm, followed by kiddush with Q & A and savory snacks.
