Do We Fear Women?

The dictionary definition of gynephobia is "the abnormal fear of women." Is there a normal fear of women? How would that be expressed? This seminar will examine evidence that such a fear exists and look at cultural institutions that might support it. Feminist thought links social organization of parenting to sexual inequality and a fear of women. Are there other explanations? We will use psychoanalytic understanding to explore possible sources for a fear of women.

Lynn Perlman, Ph.D., Cert. Psya., is Dean of Graduate Studies at BGSP, where she is a supervising and training analyst. She has a long standing interest in using psychoanalysis to understand conflicts that men and women experience relating to women, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.
