Do We Fear Women?
The dictionary definition of gynephobia is "the abnormal fear of women." Is there a normal fear of women? How would that be expressed? This seminar will examine evidence that such a fear exists and look at cultural institutions that might support it. Feminist thought links social organization of parenting to sexual inequality and a fear of women. Are there other explanations? We will use psychoanalytic understanding to explore possible sources for a fear of women.
