Book club to discuss ‘Orphan Train’ and ‘The Girls of Atomic City’ at Boylston Place

EPOCH Independent and Assisted Living at Boylston Place will host
two book club meetings with Gail Rice on select Fridays in July at 11:15 a.m.
On July 11, Rice will discuss Christina Baker Kline’s best-seller “Orphan
Train.” The novel tells the story of an elderly Irish immigrant Vivian – who, as
a child, was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other orphans – and
the orphan Molly Ayer who helps Vivian uncover the mysteries of her past. The
novel draws on the history of the trains that carried more than 200,000
abandoned children from the East Coast to the Midwest between 1824 and 1929.

On
July 25, Rice will cover the new bestseller “The Girls of Atomic City” by
Denise Kiernan. The book chronicles the true story of the women recruited to
work on the atomic bomb during WWII. Enticed by solid wages and the promise of
war-ending work, the women worked in the secret city of Oak Ridge, TN, unaware
of the true nature of their tasks. Book club discussions are free and open to
the public, but space is limited. Please RSVP by calling 617-244-6400.
