Climate Week 2013 Plans Announced

This year, Brookline Climate Week will have over 50 events and displays around town, including a 3R Depot Extravaganza to reduce, reuse and recycle at Town Hall, Brookline’s Winter Farmers Market in the Arcade Building, a maze, and several events at the Brookline Library.

The maze is set up between Town Hall and the Main Library, called Be A-MAZEd, made of old traffic signs, which deliver a message about the environment. The maze is 70 feet long and 45 feet wide. “There must have been about 300 people, particularly children, delighting in the wonder of the maze,” Mary Dewart of the Climate Action Committee said.

Brookline’s Climate Action Committee and the Library teamed up with Brookline Reads to educate children about our effects on climate change. “Our topic for reading this year was food and the contribution food production has on climate change,” David Pantalone, Program Chair of Brookline Reads said. “We have an urban agriculture panel, an author session, an art exhibit, a policy panel discussion, all geared towards climate change.”

Last year, Climate Week tried out an experiment with the indoor farmer’s market, which was so successful, it is now being held in the Arcade Building. “We are very excited to invite you and the entire community to the events throughout Climate Week,” Dewart said.

The 3R Depot, an 11-station drop off station, will encourage people to reduce, reuse and recycle products like clothes, sports equipment, building material as well as recyclable waste.

Author Kristin Kimball will be speaking on at the Main Library from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, January 31. This event is the centerpiece of Climate Week.

“We have expanded on our success from last year and we hope that people will enjoy the displays and learn from what we have to offer this year,” Dewart said.
