BU To Continue to Expand College's Footprint, Make Comm. Ave Improvements

Boston University's 10-year master plan, which includes a new academic building, a science and research building, and funding transportation and transit improvements along Comm. Ave, was approved by the city last week.

The university's plan calls for the construction of a new 350,000 square foot academic building on a current parking lot at 645 Comm. Ave, and building a 165,000 square foot science and engineering research building at 30-38 Cummington Mall, accoridng to plans submitted to the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

Other projects include renovating the existing BU Law school, and renovating/updating its Kenmore Square dorms Myles Standish Hall and Myles Standish Annex, and committing money to improve transit and transportation along Commonwealth Avenue.  

The university has already committed more than $13 million in various projects to improve Kenmore Square and Commonwealth Avenue, according to the BRA.

"As part of Boston University’s IMP, the Commonwealth Avenue Improvement Project is crucial to improving pedestrian safety, traffic operations, and vehicle circulation," the BRA said in its approval of the plan. 

All projects will still require individual public review.
