Brookline Police Eligible for Justice Assistance Grant

The Brookline Police Department has been able to apply for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant for the fifth year in a row.

This grant is a $70,939 regional award, which is available for Quincy, Brookline, Weymouth and Randolph. Each town will receive a certain percentage based on crime rate and population.

“The Brookline Police Department will be the lead applicant and administrative agent for the grant,” Chief Dan O’Leary told the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday, July 9. “With that, we get 10 percent, or $18,050.”

The Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice and community corrections.

The Department will use this money for technological improvements.

“I wanted to say that I think the preventative measures for crime have worked well,” Selectmen Nancy Daily said. “Our crime statistics have looked good in the recent years and I think the preventative work has been a big part of that.”

The Board was unanimous in authorizing the Department to apply for the grant.
