My head Is In The Sand!!!!! But, I Just Know We Are Going To Get A Divorce One Day. What To Do To Protect Myself Without Alerting My Husband?

How many of us have had that feeling that you know things are not right between you and your spouse, but it is difficult to do anything about it? It is much easier not to rock the boat, until you are sure that you want a divorce. HOWEVER, it is good idea to create some independence while you are deciding what path your marriage will take in the future.

  1. Establish your own credit- get a credit card in your name only or be the sole leasor on your car or other loan.
  2. Continue working. If you have left the workforce consider re-entry. If neither of those options are viable stay current or upgrade your education so that you are primed to re-enter the work force. Remember that all skills you learned while volunteering translate to the working world.
  3. Get and keep records. As examples, get copies of your spouse’s employment contracts and tax returns.
  4. Don’t incur unnecessary liabilities. Liabilities, just like assets, are shared in a divorce.
