AMC Chestnut Hill Closed; New Showcase Super Lux on the Way

The Chestnut Hill City Sports has also closed, as it prepares for a move to the new building next door.

The AMC cinema in Chestnut Hill has officially closed up shop, making way for a new Showcase Super Lux slated to move in just a few doors down.

The five-screen Chestnut Hill movie theatre closed its doors on Thursday, Jan. 17, according to representatives from WS Development, the owner and operator of The Street (formerly the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center).

A sign had been posted on the theatre's marquee announcing its closure, but has since been taken down.

Although he did not comment on the future of the theatre building, WS Development Corporate Marking Director David Fleming told Newton Patch this week that the AMC space will be included in the continued redevelopment of the shopping center. For now, the space will remain empty.

In addition to the cinema news, Fleming told Newton Patch this week that the shopping center's City Sports has also closed, but only temporarily. The sporting goods store is planning to move to the ground level of the new, 115,000-square-foot building that has been constructed on the former Macy's site next door.

City Sports is aiming for an opening sometime in March, according to WS Development marketing representative Allison Yee.

WS Development is planning to demolish the building that housed City Sports and Century Bank and in its place, re-build a three-story, mixed-use structure that will include retail space, office space and potentially restaurant space.

Century Bank vacated the building in the fall and plans to open in the new Chestnut Hill Square development across Route 9.

According to Fleming, demolition on the City Sports/Century Bank building will start sometime in February. Construction fencing is already set up around the building.

The building that houses Legal Sea Foods and The Cottage will remain intact, Fleming clarified.

WS Development is currently working on a multi-phase rebuilding and renovation of the shopping center, which includes the two new buildings as well as some pedestrian improvements and landscaping additions.

The new 115,000-square-foot building (formerly the Macy's site) will include a Sports Club/LA, lululemon, City Sports, Pinkberry, Bernard's, , Polarn O. Pyret and a Showcase Super Lux theatre.

Officials from Sports Club/LA indicated earlier this month they are planning for a late February opening.

As for the new theatre, Yee told Newton Patch that the cinema is planning an opening for late May. Among other amenities, the new movie theatre will feature a 250-seat Davio's Northern Italian steakhouse.
