Wednesday: Public Meeting on Hammond Pond Access

The meeting will cover the proposed enhancements to the pond as well as the water's overall health.

Residents and community members interested in the proposed enhancements around Chestnut Hill's  are encouraged to attend a meeting Wednesday night at . 

According to a press release from the State Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the meeting will provide an update on the proposed plans to expand access at Hammond Pond. Officials will also give an update on the pond's health and the proposed project schedule. 

Public comments will also be welcome at Wednesday night's meeting.

The largest feature of the proposed park improvements would be the creation of a hiking loop, made by linking the existing path to a new, floating boardwalk that would allow pond visitors to walk across the pond on a walkway about 40 feet from the shoreline. 

The three-phase project would also include measures to improve the current path and tackle environmental problems that have plagued the pond in recent years.

The project got its start after the family of Michael Rudyak decided to commemorate their beloved father/son with enhancements to his favorite place to spend time in Newton. The Rudyak family donated $22,500 to the project and the DCR agreed to match that amount, totaling $45,000.  

Several public meetings have been held on the project, with residents .

The Chestnut Hill Neighborhood Association , as members would like to see a more substantive plan developed to address the health of the pond and water quality.

Wednesday's meeting will be held in the City Hall War Memorial starting at 6:30 p.m.
